PrP CS6 on Mac or PC
Posted by Gautam Pandey on October 10, 2012 at 10:52 amHi,
Decided to make the move and jump onto Premiere Pro.
In two minds about which hardware to go with.
Any obvious performance advantages of MAc over PC or vice versa?
Would love to hear any opinions or experiences out there.
Thanks guys!

October 10, 2012 at 3:16 pmSwitched to CS6 Production Premium from FCP. Although I still prefer a Mac due to my knowledge around the OS I also work at a small shop that switched to PC. Both are very stable and I do like some things better on the PC over the Mac and vice versa. There were some minor issues we had to get past when switching from a Mac to a PC such as Mac Formatted drives returning from the field, the large number of filters we used that were only supported on a Mac and how to get around exporting a ProRes file to our distributers. Although the transition to PC was bumpy at first many of the issues have been settled.

October 11, 2012 at 4:35 amThanks Victor! The other decision I’m having trouble with the switch over is what codec to switch to.
We’ve been in Apple Pro Res for a couple of years now and I know PrP can support it, but since I’m moving away from apple (and who knows what apple will do next with the codec!) I was wondering what codec people are using with PC’s.
Thanks!

October 11, 2012 at 1:34 pmYes Alex. Im leaving all QT codecs behind (unless requested by clients).
OP1a AVC Intra 100 is very robust yet creates reasonably sized files. Its a European broadcast standard I believe. PrP exports it almost 2X faster then Prores or QT DNxHD. Ive also switched to MP4 H.264 for the same reasons. Very fast and clean. Bye bye QuickTime.Tom Daigon

October 12, 2012 at 11:21 pmI have to say, that given my own experience, and that of a lot of folks on this board, that my assumption is that Adobe is having a bit more issues with Mac OS<>Pr interaction, vs. Windows 7 64 bit. It just seems to be more problematic. That said, I’ve moved over to Windows, and while there is a lot to like about the Mac OS (I own a Mac Pro fully configured and used to run FCP and Pr on it in the past), I’ve really liked having a wide variety of laptops and desktops to choose from. While I do not do Hollywood grade work, or work in a large team, I’m happy with the choice. Your workflow and wider team of collaborators might force the issue though, one way or the other.
