  • Seeking advice on Video Editing Laptop

Posted by Harvey Goldberg on September 13, 2012 at 6:08 pm

I need to buy a new Windows 7 laptop, and am looking for recommendations. I currently am running Adobe Premier CS5.5 but plan to upgrade to 6. Whatever Laptop I buy I need a Nvidia card that will run the Adobe Mercury Engine.

    Thanks

If I were heading in that direction I would strongly consider the HP Z! as an option.

Lenovo W530 mobile workstation is one of the best deals around at about $2K nicely configured:
    – Core i7-3610QM
    – 16GB RAM
    – NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Graphics 2GB
    – 1920×1080 display
    – Win7 Pro 64-bit
    – 3-year warranty

It has an IPS display, USB 3.0, MiniDP, the new “K” series NVidia Quadro card, takes up to 32GB memory.

Similar HP and Dell models will be a few hundred more.

If this is outside your budget, Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 comes with GTX-660M and similar specs for around $1K.

    More details in another thread.

I’ve heard mixed things about Lenovo support, plus it’s not a US company; if you prefer one from a US or a Japanese company, I’ll dig out more info on those.

    Tom,

Wow, I really like the concept of this machine…however I have to carry it on a plane and I’m afraid it will be too big. My desktop will need replacing soon, and I think this will be great in that mode. Thanks for the tip.

    Alex,

My company uses Lenovo and it is beginning to grow on me, however Lenovo support isn’t bad it’s nonexistant…so if I bought one, I’d be on my own if anything was wrong. Still I really like the what the W530 gives me. I have not seen an HP model close to this…do you know of one off the top of your head. I may want to go that route for the better customer service.

    Thanks for all your help,

    Harvey

Yes, EliteBook 8770w Mobile Workstation (C1E55UT) with Quadro K3000M.

I don’t see any 15.6″ ones with an NVidia card – so it’s possible we’re limited to 17″ models with HP.

Which one, the model I linked to?

Just in case, I don’t see it on Amazon, and NewEgg is out of stock; my distribution (Synnex) has 28 units of it, the price before taxes or shipping – $2500.

I.e. if you’d like to order it and can’t find it for below $2.5K, let me know.

    Alex,
What minimum RAID would you suggest with this beast for a new PPro user?

    Thank you, Sir.
