Broadcast Monitor & Premiere Pro CS6
I own a small production company and until recently had been using an HP Computer Monitor to do color correction in Adobe Premiere Pro. I recently purchased a Matrox MX02 Mini with Thunderbolt which is hooked up to my 15″ Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo i7 2.2 GHz Quad Core. I also purchased an entry level Sony Broadcast Monitor LMD-2110W to use for doing color correction. I’ve read reviews that this monitor is not as good as some of the more expensive ones, but I hope to be able to get better results than when I used the computer monitor.
I have never calibrated a monitor before and would like to do it correctly. Unfortunately, Sony has not been very helpful as one of their representatives first told me that the monitor cannot be calibrated. Then when I told him I thought that was incorrect, he put me on hold, came back and said it has already been calibrated and does not need any calibration. So again, when I expressed doubt he put me on hold and said I would need to take it in to a professional shop in order to calibrate it. I then spoke with another employee who said that I would need a Signal Generator and a Luminance Meter in order to calibrate it.
So I’m quite uncertain where to proceed as I have read in several articles (including the one below) that suggest all I need to do is send color bars from Premiere Pro and then follow the steps in the article.

I am not creating any TV shows that will be broadcasted nationally or anything, so I don’t need this to be perfect. I do have one show that airs on a local PBS affiliate and I would like to have a pretty good idea of how it will look on people’s TVs through this Sony Monitor.
So please let me know if I do in fact need to have a signal generator and luminance meter, or if sending the color bars from a Premiere Pro timeline will be essentially just as good. Also, any input on whether or not that article is correct would be very helpful as well.

I don’t like the bars in premiere.
The ones made in Final Cut Pro are better for calibration in my experience.
I use that same procedure you provided a link to.
If you can get it to calibrate to the bars
and you use your vector scope and luminance
to check things, it should be pretty darn close. -

Thanks for the help guys, I’m running CS6 so I think I will try using their HD color bars and send them to the monitor for calibration.
I also plan to learn more about the scopes so that I can utilize them as much as possible.
