Recomended Hard Disk
Hi, looks like the Hard Disk is the bottleneck on my system. What HD are good to get? I may get 2 and RAID 0 them but am looking for a HD that offers good sustained throughput. Think a 10,000 RPM drive is out of my budget but what are the best 72000 ones.

Thanks, since then I have read people finding Seagates dying (I have a dead 1TB one myself) so was thinning the Samsung f£ may be a good (and cheaper) option.

I like the western digital black edition drives. Fast, robust and made to handle intensive read/write applications.

I use the Seagate Barracuda drives in my system. Three 1TB drives in a raid 0 gets me these results in BM Disk Speed Test:

Yes, I have come across them but they are a lot more expensive. 139 vs 78 for Barracuda. I am simple trying to find something that is OK for DSLR footage and am on a bit of a budget.

If you want strong performance, your best bet is to use a RAID configuration.

Ben there might be a few bad apples…er drives…thats par for the course.
I know a lot of people use the Seagates with trouble free operation.
They also have a good warranty period. -
You should check out Other World Computing for drives. Here is their page for pre-configured two drive RAIDs that should meet your requirements. You will want one with eSATA for best performance. Firewire 800 will limit you to 80mB/sec. I have several of the dual port eSATA Mercury Elite Pros that will give you 250mB/sec with the included dual port 6G eSATA card. It is the bottom config on this page. I put the drives in myself and ordered the Hitachi drives and the box separately. I have 15 of the 2 TB ones and they have been flawless. I am not sure what drives are in the pre-configured ones, but you can see what they carry in their bare drive section or give them a call.
