I am animating a shatter of a logo (just some numbers that fill the frame) and am having a problem. The image was created in Illustrator 11 and I’m animating in AE 6. I have used a copy of the layer as a custom shatter map, but when I’m animating the shatter (by using a seperate gradient map) I’m getting edges around the logo. I want the shatter to be clean and the object to shatter as whole pieces, but I’m getting what can best be described as shards. Any ideas?

if they are just letters that don’t overlap this is what I do:

Instead of just making a copy of the letters that are black, make black rectangles that each cover a single letter, but don’t overlap. Then use this as the custom map….

    does that make sense?
