    Hello All,

I’m having an issue that many have seemed to have. Recently we purchased the GTX 285 Cards for our Macs to take advantage of the Mercury Playback Engine for both CS5 and (when we upgrade soon) CS6.

However, I cannot for the life of me get the Engine running at all despite many software and driver downloads and following the advice of many folks online.

    I’ve downloaded and installed:
The latest NVIDIA Drivers for the GTX 285 (256.02.25)
The Latest CUDA Drivers (Version 4.2.10)
    The CUDA Toolkit 4.2.9
    GPU SDK 4.2.9

I’ve also confirmed that I’m running the computer in 64bit, and I’ve been using the GPUSniffer Program and I’ve also confirmed that the GTX285 is listed on the cuda_supported_cards.txt file in CS5.

Lastly, I’m running Mac 10.6.8 and all other specs exceed the requirements of CS5/6.

    Thoughts?

I forgot to mention that when the computer is in root access, the GPUSniffer detects the CUDA with no problems, but with my account, it won’t register.

    Hey All,

I just wanted to let you know, I’ve got my GTX 285 working. I hope this thread helps out anyone else that runs into these issues.

    The secret to my success:

I downloaded and installed a different, older, set of CUDA drivers. The 4.1.29 Drivers to be exact. Not sure if that’s all the problem was, or if it was a combination of things, but she’s working fine as far as I can tell.

    Ryan,

How much of an improvement has the GTX285 made for you?

Well, to be honest, I’ve just gotten it working on my the Mac and haven’t had anything to edit just yet. However, from the quick tests that I ran, I noticed a definite improvement in playback of recently imported files.

I’ve used the CUDA graphics cards at home in my PC and I’ve loved it ever since I got them working (much easier on a PC by the way).

As far as the GTX 285 goes, it seems like it’ll do the job. I would have preferred to get the Quadro 4000 however, I’m not the one paying the bills so we went with the cheaper model. Good luck trying to find one, I had to get mine off of eBay (not my first, second, or third choice).

    UPDATE:

After pulling a lot of old drivers out of the system, everything began to work okay, for a while. I feel like I just have to give the computer 12 hours and it then decides to shut the GPU acceleration back off. It’s currently off and I’m running out of ideas.

    UPDATE AGAIN

I’ve updated the CUDA drivers to the latest version (which are the drivers I had started this whole thing using) and it’s working now. We’ll see if it continues to work tomorrow.

    FINAL UPDATE:

Well, after about a week of “swapping drivers” (loading a different CUDA driver daily) I finally wiped my system clean. After getting everything reinstalled, it looks like that fixed the issue I was having.

My guess was that I was ultimately having a driver conflict with the CUDA or NVIDIA drivers and some other driver previously installed on my machine. I don’t know which driver was the problem, but if I had to guess it was the AJA for Premiere CS5 drivers or a leftover ATI GFX card driver.
