I’m new to Premiere Pro but this just seems silly. I have a footage folder called FTG and inside that folder are two more folders called A-CAM and B-CAM and inside those are more folders broken up into B-ROLL, INTERVIEW, etc… When I import the FTG folder into Premiere it does not import the A-CAM or B-CAM folders, Premiere only imports the video clip inside the folders and puts them all into the FTG folder in one huge jumbled mess.

Am I doing something wrong? This seems like something Premiere should have been able to do oh… I don’t know, a decade ago.

How do you import a folder of footage, sound effects, or images that contain subfolders?

Are you using the Media Browser to import your footage?

Nope, I tried dragging and dropping from the Finder and I also tried File > Import… – both gave me the same results.

My question was an implicit recommendation to use the Media Browser if you weren’t already doing so.

    Hey Dustin,

I can understand how the ability to import a subtree folder structure would appear to be an obvious workflow, however it isn’t in there.

I could think of one reason why it’s in there:
    – Complex folder structure based tapeless media would be, well, horrible if it imported all of the subtrees and each, say RED files which are embedded in their own folder per shot would make for a messy bin structure in the Project panel.

However I do feel a tick box for specifically managed folders would be a great time saver. Since it’s not part of the workflow I’d suggest you file a request, with all the great beneficial reasons why and how you would implement it. 🙂

I tend to do the media management and import one Folder level at a time. It’s not that much of a problem… But I can see the benefits of this workflow.

    Cheers JB

Sorry Todd, I should have mentioned that in my initial test I did not use the Media Browser however, I have since tried importing folders using the Media Browser and it imports them the exact same way as the other methods I tried.

Yeah, I’ll definitely put in a feature request. I was just hoping some FCP7 users might have run into the same issue and figured out a better workflow than manually importing one folder at a time.

Importing my SFX folder is not going to be fun…

I just tried adding a folder with about about dozen subfolders via Media Browser – and once again,
    it ignores/destroys the folder structure.

    Am I doing something wrong?

Baffles the mind why Premiere Pro would actively ignore folder structures.

Dustin, a handy tip that someone shared with me:
Import your folder into AE – it will retain the structure.

Then copy/paste that folder from AE into Premiere Pro.
Ta-daaaa – Premiere Pro retains the folder structure.

Put a jpg in each final folder of your structure I usually put it next to the bpav folder so as not to keep them.
