  AVCHD media naming

  With the good news being reported about CS6’s greatly improved handling of AVCHD files, I’m hoping that we can finally skip the intermediate transcode to Cineform, saving a literal ton of drive space. However, there is one thing about the file and folder structure that most AVCHD cams use that causes a problem. Our HMC-150 creates media in folders named by date…

  021512_1
  021512_2
  021612_1
  043012_1

  And of course, in each folder the clip naming goes…

  00000.m2ts
  00001.m2ts
  00002.m2ts

  So, you load your media into Premiere, edit your program, and somewhere down the line you lose the media links, causing Premiere to start asking for files on project startup. Trouble is, Premiere will ask for the file named ‘00000.m2ts’ first, not specifying which ‘00000.m2ts’, and there will probably be several identically named files spread across the folders. Choose the wrong one, and it will be painfully evident that you did, because most of the other clips will now be linked to the wrong files.

  What we’ve typically done, when transcoding to Cineform, is rename the transcodes to include each file folder name…

  021512_1-00000.avi
  021512_2-00000.avi
  021612_1-00000.avi
  043012_1-00000.avi

  This takes care of the file name issue. However, I understand the ramifications of renaming the actual M2TS files, especially in the instance of spanned clips. Is there a common way that folks are handling this?

  my workaround has been to make sure the recording on the media
  never resets to zero. We keep the original recordings on the sd cards when
  shooting more footage….but I understand that won’t work in all situations.

  So far what I’ve been doing is importing footage into separate folders
  and keeping notes as to what goes in where.

  another option is to make a copy of your media (should be doing this anyways
  as a virtual tape master) and rename the files before you import them.

  /camera_files/ = original unaltered camera media
  /footage/ = copy camera files, but renamed files to import

  Not the best option, but it works for now.

  I just installed CS 6 today. Sorry to report MTS files would not play back at all on a 12 core Mac Pro. Played OK in CS 5.5 although not great. So much for that.

  I’ve been playing .MTS files just fine on an 8-core mac pro
  with quadro 4000 and Raid 5 disk array through a very old
  multibridge extreme from Black Magic.

  with cs 5.5 stacked video tracks always stop or stutter without
  finishing, even when fully rendered some times.

  in CS 6 that stopping/stuttering is completely gone.
