  • MacBook Pro for DSLR editing?

    Hey everyone,

So I currently run CS 5.5 on a desktop windows PC that I built, buts it’s pretty old and outdated now. It has an old AMD quad core processor from 2008 I believe, and only 4gbs of DDR 2. I am considering getting MacBook Pro to use as my main system and putting the max amount of ram into it(I believe it’s max is 8?) I know desktops are better for editing but I really prefer portability of a laptop.

My question is, do you think a 15 or 17 inch MBP model is good for editing DSLR footage from a T3i, with not many effects just some color correcting, text, multiple tracks etc…

My main reason I am moving on from my current desktop is scrolling via the timeline is impossible on my current machine. In order to preview a video I must render it out first which results in having 10 edits of something by the time im done. Anyone have any scrolling issues or success in MBPs?

I am also considering waiting as the new MBP models are likely to come out soon and will of course feature significant upgrades.

    Thanks for any help offered

    Sean

I own two mbp 17 2.4ghz i7 and while they are fast enough SSD 500gb drive and 16gb ram, the stupid computer overheats and it stops charging!

Freaks me out, definitely a major issue! maybe the 2ghz will put out less heat but i have a giant fan and a laptop cooler with 2 fans and it drives me nuts, even photoshop makes it stop charging last week rendering 30 second film project made it stop and processing 1k images to jpg in photoshop made it stop charging down to 60% this is while it’s plugged in to AC….

overall lame design and apple sucks im my opinion and i’ve owned apples for 20 years…

    David,

Thanks for your reply. This sounds like a big issue, do you plan on going windows for your next system? I would consider going with a windows laptop if someone thought there was a really good one that would offer superior performance to a MacBook Pro.

I don’t know I hate windows interface, really sucks however alien ware laptops are built to the tilt! they cost as much or more than an apple.

Apple screws us (pro type) because they want the laptop to be 1/2″ thick which is ok but when my processor goes over 185 that’s the battery going bye bye too…

once it goes to battery mode that reduces the processor and graphics so performance goes too… all that said, I’m stuck because I bought two laptops..

The HP ENVY Series seems to have the power, look, and feel of MBP, if that’s what you’re looking for.

I was lucky enough to get BOTH worlds… a 17″ MacBook Pro and a 17.3″ Dell Precision Mobile Workstation!

They both have their strengths and weaknesses… I use the MacBook Pro for Graphic Designs and the Dell (Adobe Premiere CS5/After effect) for video editing as the FILES from my DSLR are windows native off the Panasonic GH2.

Those files would have to be ENCODED before editing on the Mac… a nightmare!

With my dell I insert the SDHC card and start editing right away!

If your DSLR is a CANON (.mov h264 based) you should be fine with the MACBOOK Pro… the MacBook Pro has a great display and is less bulky and run Mac OS… but I do hear his fan kicking in more often than the dell…

Before you buy COMPARE Apple with dell as you have good tech support and room to customize your computer with huge graphic cards and plenty of other options: https://www.dell.com/us/soho/p/precision-m6600/pd

    Good luck!
