Which CUDA card for budget HD
Posted by Davib Le roux on March 20, 2012 at 5:13 amI am doing delayed live editing with material shot in 1080i on the sony NX5 and p2.
We will be broadcasting in 720p.We have switched from FCP to premiere to allow the faster ingest of AVCHD media but we now need a new GPU. We are on a tight budget so I need to know if the Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 will be fast enough or if I need to purchase the Quadro 4000 or the Quadro fx4800.
Although for our budget the FX4800 is probably not an option.

March 20, 2012 at 8:12 amHi,
I can’t speak to the FX4800 as I don’t own one, but I do own the other two cards.
The data I’ve seen indicates that the GTX 285 is actually a bit faster than the Quadro 4000, but they are pretty hard to come by now. I’ve had good luck the MacVidCards on eBay.
As a practical matter, I find the performance pretty much indistinguishable.
There are a few other things you’ll need to consider as well. The Quadro 4000 is a one slot card, so it’s easier to fit into a complex setup, where the GTX 285 is double wide and will only fit in slot one as it’s the only double wide slot available in a MacPro.
You’ll also need to assure that you have sufficient power and connectors for the card you choose.

March 20, 2012 at 9:02 amThanks for the feedback, never heard of MacVidCard, it’s awesome.
Will check it out. A Double wide would work but i’d prefer single as we have a Decklink in their as well.
Do these guys sell the pcie power cables too?

March 20, 2012 at 4:14 pmDavib, I was looking at budget CUDA cards as well.
It ended up just making a lot more sense to purchase
a PNY Quadro 4000 for mac. I paid $ 768 for it online.you might be able to get one for a bit less on ebay.
they come with the internal power cable needed.
It sure makes a difference, I can tell you that.
Keying with ultrakeyer in premiere, playing in realtime…un-rendered.

March 20, 2012 at 10:34 pmMy GTX 285 came with appropriate cables.
The Quadro series are likely a better answer in general, but on the Mac side the drivers can be problematic. The current release seems to be relatively well behaved.
New cards from Nvidia coming soon as well, NAB is just around the corner…
