Posted by Oliver Peters on December 31, 2011 at 3:22 am

I’m trying to work out an offline-online workflow strategy with PPro55. I have ALEXA PR4444 LogC files and corresponding externally-converted “edit proxies” (PR LT w/LUT & TC burn). I am editing with the “proxies” and then want to swap the files out for the full-res PR4444 camera files. File names, TC and reel numbers all match between the two sets of files.

I have attempted to use Project Manager to create a “trimmed, offline” project and then relink the clips to the camera originals. When I do this, the timeline clips all start at the start-point of each file and not the correct in-point. I presume this is a bug. Anyone else tried this with success? The same method works perfectly in FCP 7. Also in PPro55, if I export a CMX 3600 EDL and then import and relink the EDL, it also works properly. Thoughts?

    Hi Oliver….

I’m not very knowledgeable about the Alexa details….

Do the file names match between your proxy versions and the Alexa versions?

If you are working with proxies that are same original lengths as Alexa source, what is the benefit of creating the “trimmed project” as middle step?

Wouldn’t a straight relink of offline media work to get your conform into place?

You could then subsequently make a trimmed version after relinking, if you are looking to have a final consolidated version….(and this depends on whether the Alexa media is frame based or GOP based..I’ll assume a media of that high a quality is frame based)….

    I would think anyway…

    What do you think?

    Hi,

    Thanks for the feedback.

[Alex Udell] “Do the file names match between your proxy versions and the Alexa versions?”

    Yes.

[Alex Udell] “If you are working with proxies that are same original lengths as Alexa source, what is the benefit of creating the “trimmed project” as middle step?”

The reason to do this is to create a new “online” (full res) project that only contains the clips used in the timeline. There are only two options that I can tell (using Project Mgr) : 1) copy to a new location, or 2) create a new “trimmed” project with handles. Unless I’m missing something, only the “trimmed” option allows you to create new master clips that are offline, without the additional step of copying media.

[Alex Udell] “Wouldn’t a straight relink of offline media work to get your conform into place?”

I would like to keep both timelines intact.

    Hi Oliver,

I just double checked, and it appears you are correct regarding the creation of a “offline project”

[Oliver Peters] “The reason to do this is to create a new “online” (full res) project that only contains the clips used in the timeline.”

So it’s not so much that you want to consolidate media. You just want a version that is limited to only the clips used?

    Hmmm…..ok

    If you were to…

    1) Make a New Project
    2) Import your previous Project into it, this will give you the option to select the entire project or only the sequence(s) you want
    into it.
    3) This will result in a Bin Folder that contains that sequence and sources from the original project. I’m not sure about the original bin structure being maintained during import. (this is completely non destructive BTW and won’t harm your original project).
    4) Then you can select the sources in the Project Panel, right click and “make offline” but “leave them on disk”. Thus, disconnecting the media, but leaving the files on the drive.
    5) Select the sources in the project panel again, right click and “relink” to the Full Resolution material.

    Some notes….

From memory, I don’t know whether just the used sources will get imported, when you Import just the conform seqeunce into your clean project. But the project panel metadata has columns for Audio/Video usage which can help you determine that pretty quickly by column sorting. If you reconnect items that are unused in the sequence, the usage column will be blank for those items. It’s pretty easy then to select the unused items and delete them from the project. Also PPro will warn you if you are deleting items used in the sequence.

From there if you wanted to make a media consolidated version of this project, you could use the Project manager from there.

    Does that help?

    Alex

[Alex Udell] “So it’s not so much that you want to consolidate media. You just want a version that is limited to only the clips used?”

Correct. This is for offline/online editing. For offline you want all the proxies. When you move to online/finishing, then you only want the final sequence. But you still want both sets of media accessible in order to verify accuracy during the final stages.

[Alex Udell] “If you were to…”

    I’ll test that out. Thanks.

I ran the test and it works with a minor wrinkle.

    1. Create new project and import the selected sequence from the proxy edit. Only the clips in the sequences are imported.
    2. Make clips offline/leave on disc.
    3. Temporarily hide the folder of proxy media at the Finder level. For instance, move the folder to the Trash.
    4. In PPro link clips to the full res media files. If you don’t do #3, the first selected clip will link to the full-res media, but all others will link back to the proxy media instead.
    5. Move the proxy media out of the trash.
    6. Now each sequence will link to the corresponding media type and in/out points seem to be correct.

    Thanks.

    That’s great!

[Oliver Peters] “3. Temporarily hide the folder of proxy media at the Finder level. For instance, move the folder to the Trash.”

optionally….you can temporarily rename the inclusive media folder. i usually append something like “_offline” to the end of the folder name

I get paranoid about the trash can….

    🙂

Happy new year to you sir!

Agreed. Just a test at this point. I suspect any method that “hides” the media from PPro will work.

Thank you Oliver and Alex. Ive been curious about how the Offline-Online workflow would happen in PrP.

In Avid DS it was so much simpler. I would just save a copy of my offline (naming it High Res), change the sequence setting from lo res to hi res and digitize. I must say it seems much less convoluted than the PrP approach.

[Tom Daigon] ” change the sequence setting from lo res to hi res and digitize”

Yes, but remember we are talking about file-based relinking, not a tape workflow. When you relink, you are inherently cheating the system to get it to do something it wasn’t intended for. FCP 7 has very weak media management, which plays to its benefits in this process. FCP X makes this sort of think impossible. PPro is tighter than FCP 7, but not so much so that you can’t make it work.

That is true Oliver, I was just waxing nostalgic on the simplicity of the older DS process. As I said, its good to know a functional workflow on PrP that accommodates the Offline-Online approach. I dont seem to use it as much now as I did when cutting SD on the DS. But Im sure the opportunity will arise.
