  New System to handle AVCHD Editing

  Building a new system and was hoping to get some direction from the forum. I exclusively work with AVCHD and want a system that can smoothly handle the work load with effects and use of AE. Besides the MPE adobe certified Nvida video card (looking @ GTX-570), what should I place the most importance on? In addition, I have read a lot threads on hard drive set-up, but still a little confused…what type of HDs should I purchase (speed/cache), how many, and how should they be configured (operating system on one, Adobe on another)? RAID 0? Below is what I have spec’d out so far:

  CS5 Creative Suite (already own)

  Window 7 64-bit

  GeForce GTX 570 (Fermi) 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

  Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost)
  MSI X58M LGA 1366 Intel X58 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
  24Gig RAM DDR3

  SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 HD204UI 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5″ Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

  Hi Todd,

  I think the hardware is looking decent, except the hard drive – avoid any drive with “Green” in the name, as these will kill performance in the name of energy saving!

  Look for a 7200rpm SATA 6GB with 64mb cache, such as the Western Digital Caviar Black. In case you were not aware, flooding in Thailand has wiped out WD and Hitachi drive factories and prices are going up, and supply issues are also coming our way, so whatever drives you get, get them ASAP even before the rest of the PC parts.

  You will want a MINIMUM of 2 hard drives, 1 for OS and Apps, another dedicated to VIDEO. You might wish to have another drive for scratch, or to use 2 drives in RAID mode, etc, but at least 2 drives in the PC.

  If you are doing this professionally (i.e. to make money) please consider getting a Raid for better performance and insurance against damage!
