Todd, I wanted to bounce an idea i have for expediting the PrP timeline to a finished file off you. It is the result of dialogs I have had with Wil and some of the folks at AJA that I beta test for. I have the utmost respect for your knowledge and experience with PrP 5.5 and want to know your thoughts.
My goal was to avoid some of the lenthy export times that can happen with certain kinds of productions in PrP. Choosing Prores as the Preview codec is the first step in my alternative approach.This workflow at this point is theoretical, but feasible. Like I said, if you edit either long form shows or graphic intensive projects, the exporting process can involve hours of time. All my professional life Ive worked in client oriented sessions. At the end of a 2 day edit, if I told a client it was going to take 8 hours to export their video, they probably would run screaming from the edit bay
So the solution is this. Instead of spending all that rendering time, I just play out the timeline through a Kona 3 SDI output that is hooked up to a Ki Pro Mini recorder. If the show is 20 minutes, the dump to the KPM is 20 min. and you get a Prores master when you are done. 90 min. movie? Instead of a 20 hour render, you spend 90 minutes dumping the timeline to the KPM. Its analogous to dumping to tape, a process I did for the last 30 years in about every edit bay I ever worked in. There are some unknowns at this point that need testing. And if involves purchasing the AJA product. But I think its a great alternative to the time intensive export process that PrP is locked into for certain kinds of productions.

I’m not Todd, but this is a workflow that I’ve recommended to various editors for a myriad of purposes…
I’ve recommended using a KiPro for cross-platform compatibility to certain PC editors (including some Vegas users).
The KiPro was all alone as an HDSDI replacement for some time there…
Now there are other devices that you can use in similar fashion in cases where ProRes isn’t the center of your workflow, but as long as your preview files are set to be a high-quality format (such as ProRes or CineForm, etc), this works well.
The biggest item would be to make sure that users are setting up the custom sequence setting that includes the re-targeted preview format.

Thanks Tim. It seems like a very efficient solution to the lengthy export times as well. The only issue Im investigating now with AJA is if the TC out of the Kona 3 (HD-SDI spigot) can trigger the Ki Pro Mini into the record mode. I confirmed the full blown Ki Pro has 422 control which might work with Premiere, but its cost may be prohibitive to some (like me) :D.

Since I havent received any feedback yet from folks at Adobe, Im going ahead with my test of this workflow (pending acquisition of a Ki Pro Mini) and will report back here and on the Adobe Video Lounge forum on the the results.

What about outputting from your premiere system into your avid system for capture?
I might actually end up doing that with the 2 edit suites I have.

I dont have Avid software at this point. Avid has its own issues with certain formats that need to use AMA and do transcoding. I think it would just complicate the process. The Ki Pro seems easier and more reliable at the moment. Good luck! 😀

ah I thought from your signature you had another Avid DS system.
sometimes when I need a real time down conversion in high quality I will play out from my kona, into my other suite that has black-magic hardware…both are fcp systems.
works really well and wouldn’t have to buy other equipment.
