  Premiere 5.5 playback jitter using HDTV 1080p preset

  I’ve exported a clip on 5.5 using H.264 format and preset of HDTV 1080p High Quality and it’s very bad jitter. The same clip exported also on H.264 and Vimeo HD preset is fine.

  I’m running Win7 on a 64 bit i7 @ 3.07GHz with 16GB ram and mercury acceleration enabled. Footage from canon 7D and Panasonic GH2 and using the sequence preset for AVCHD 1080p 24.

  Should not this machine be capable of playing back the HDTV without problems? What am I missing? Thanks

  What exactly do you mean by “jitter”?

  Any movement in the different shots are not fluid but move step by step. It looks very unnatural.

  Did you export to a faster framerate? If you did so without frame blending, Premiere will duplicate frames. Without seeing exactly what you have, that would be my initial guess.

  Thanks for your response. No actually its the opposite – the footage was shot and then processed in premiere at 24 fps – the Vimeo preset is 30 fps but is smooth but the HDTV 1080p 24 is not.

  The file size on the Vimeo version is 250 MB and the HDTV is just under 1 GB and the latter has much higher bitrate settings. Could this be why its not playing back smooth? I would have thought my computer would have sufficient processing power to handle this though.

  When looking at the picture the movement looks symptomatic of your description of duplicated frames but if the frame rate is consistent then that can’t be the problem right?

  Playback smoothness is not just about processing power. My guess is that the problem is your disk setup. If your system can’t feed the data from the disk fast enough, then you’ll get jerky, stuttery playback.

  Playback of an H.264 stream won’t be as much of a problem in such a case, because that data is very heavily compressed, so there’s not a lot of information to read from the disk. (The burden in the case of H.264 is on the CPU.)
