  • CS4 crashes shortly after start up regardless of project.

Posted by Kylie Laston on November 6, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Everything has been working fine for months. Then I needed to
change the drive letter on a harddrive to get an old project
to be able to locate it’s needed media.. shortly after all the
media loaded.. I’d say about a minuet. Adobe CS4 crashes.

I though it would only happen with this project. but it’s
    happening with every single project.

And now trying to export anything to media encoder to try to
save it causes media encoder to immediately crash.

This is universal with every project. Years worth of work.
I suspect it has something to do with the external hard drive
letter change.. but I’ve done that before and this has never
    happened

    Please if anyone can help..

Seems to me the easiest fix would be to reinstall CS4.

Obviously something got corrupted, and since it’s happening with any project, it’s in the program or its dependent plugins.

When exactly does it crash? what’s the last thing you see on the screen?

about 1 minuet after all the media loads in the project.. it’s exactly about a minuet for every project. I tried reinstalling it didn’t help anything.. even getting rid of the preferences and reinstalling..
same problem. I know the culprit is when I changed the drive letter.. changing it back didn’t help.. also photoshop, aftereffects, and media encoder all don’t work.. All of them have worked though for about 2 years now.

This was immediately after the drive letter change.. the drive itself is healthy and all it’s files are fine.. I don’t know what to do.. I’ve tried all the basics.. clearing cache.. preference.. reinstall.. and unfortunately I didn’t have system restore turned on.. so I don’t have that option.

I really hope someone can help

What about a new project? If you make a new project, save it, restart PP and then open it what happens then? (assuming you can get that far)

Tried that.. I can get that far.. but it doesn’t solve the immediate crash after a minuet that happens every time anything is started.

So are you saying that new projects work fine?

It matters cause it might help us root out the problem.

new projects don’t work either.. they crash after a minuet just like everything else. All media loads regardless if the project is new or old.. I can play around for about a minuet.. but then it crashes..
it’s not rendering or any particular action that is causing it.. because if I were to do nothing at all.. it would still crash. regardless of the project.
