How to remove 24P advanced *without recompressing* DV frames?
Hi there. I have a 29.97 DV Quicktime movie. I have interpreted footage to 23.976 pulling out the 24p advanced (which happens to be wswww). If do the standard render Queue flow to a 24P Quicktime movie, seems AE is recompressing the frames (and taking forever also). But all I need it to do is throw away the “s” frames, a la DV Filmmaker, in a new file. Thanks somebody for your help!

AE always recompresses. Always. It’s in its nature.
If you want to minimize the loss, render to the Quicktime Animation codec.

Thanks Steve. Sigh. I need a DV file. No way around it, huh? Exporting from the project window? Nada? I just read that AE was a tool that could take advantage of advanced mode (which as 2:3:3:2 was designed specifically to avoid the need to invent some of the film frames from mixed-field video frames) allowing the copying the “w” frames without recompressing them. But they didn’t explain how to do it. I’ll see if I can find the link again to post here, not that it would be much help.
Until/if then, how do other people get around it? Is DVFilm Maker the only way on the Windows/PC side?

How about Vegas or Premiere? I have neither, but if they have the ability to create a 24p timeline and interpret the footage appropriately with no rendering, you might be able to spit out a 24p file with no rendering from the timeline. All you need is a dumb utility, not AE.
HOWEVER … it occurs to me that the DV spec may be 29.97, and you may not be able to create such a 24P file. Some codecs only work at certain frame sizes and frame rates. I don’t know. I’ve never tried to do that.

You’re right, using the NLE. Thanks. I don’t have Premiere, but neigher has FCP, maybe that will work….. As far as 24p, 23.976 works in DV (and I think the “P” part is simply by virtue of the fact that both fields are the same film frame), so that’s not a problem.

If your neighbor has FCP, you can either use Cinema Tools to remove the advanced pulldown, or you can recapture the dv material and remove the advanced pulldown on the fly with the proper easy setup.
