Export video project with ‘film grain’ / ‘sharpen’ filter for online streaming
Hi everyone,
I’ve been looking for this subject on the internet and this forum for a bit now, but unfortunatley I couldn’t find any solution.
I did a montage in Adobe Premiere CS5, sharpened up the footage and added some film grain (using the Magic Mullet’s ‘Looks’ filter).
The use of these filters and settings presents my video in the native-HD/Blu-ray-way I’m looking for and adds some nice smooth ‘painted’ edges (as seen on the next picture, but all a bit more: https://img140.exs.cx/img140/2795/008751wo.jpg).The thing is:
The only way I can seem to export this project (keeping the grainy film look) is in AVI (no codec, 15 GB – 90 seconds) or MPEG-2 Blu-ray (180 MB, 90 seconds).
The problem with online streaming (YouTube):
The video should end up on YouTube, which gives the next problem: I can upload the MPEG-2 Blu-ray (.m2t file), but YouTube compresses (and therefor blurrs) the heck out of it, which makes the video looks terrible.
I did find a 30% reasonable way in keeping the quality on YouTube ‘okay’ (converting the 15 GB uncompressed AVI file to .mp4 HD), but it still aint ‘great’…
Is anyone familiar with this way of exporting grainy projects for YouTube-streaming?

Grain is notorious for destroying the compressibility of movies. That’s because grain defeats both the intraframe and interframe compression schemes used by compressors. If you’re posting something online and the data rate needs to be relatively low, then grain is not a good idea.
