  FCP -> PPro Workflow Labels

  Now that we have all been forsaken by Apple, I am trying to determine which other NLE can accommodate my workflow.

  WORKFLOW

  After a day of filming we import and then go through all the footage and choose selects with ins/outs (sometimes multiple selects per clip) and then drop them into a sequence called selects. Within the Selects sequence we label all of these clips with a color (yellow).

  We then create a new sequence, called Primary, and use some of the clips from the Selects sequence as B-Roll over interview footage. At this point we label all of the B-Roll clips in the Primary sequence with a new color (red).

  This affords us the ability to go back to the Selects sequence and see which clips have been used in the Primary sequence and which have not. We find this very useful when we have to use the same B-Roll for multiple videos and also multiple cuts of the same video.

  It is also useful that these color labels update throughout the whole project, meaning that the label is applied in the Browser as well as all sequences.

  The main purpose of this is simply to have a way of knowing which clips are being use and where they are being used. For instance I can continue the idea and label my next cut or next video with a new label color (green).

  I was originally hoping that the new metadata foundations of FCPX could replace the labeling method with smart folders but of course it cannot. FCPX basically ends the metadata integration in the events and does not incorporate them into the projects themselves.

  I was working with Premiere and noticed that there are more options for labels. I love this. However when I change the label in a sequence it does not affect any other sequence nor does it effect the clips in the browser.

  So my question is…

  Is there a replacement workflow within Premiere that will allow me to create selects and then utilize some of the selects in a sequence and have a way of seeing which selects I have not used?

  Premiere Pro uses a default label color system based on file type and not really usage like you want. In FCP for instance you can give any clip a color and it will show up in the bin and on the timeline – not so in PPro. I have tested this in MC 5.5 and also Vegas 10 but no NLE seems to allow custom color on a per clip basis like good ole FCP – could be wrong here.

  Vegas 10 would be closest in that it uses an active Media Pool which shows everything on the timeline in various views (List, Thumbnails, Details). Vegas’ Regions and Markers and Subclipping are much easier to see and work with than other NLE’s which could help in your situation but that means leaving the Mac…

  A small part of the answer may relate to the Video/Audio usage metadata columns in the Project Panel.
  They should be viewable in the default metadata schema, if not you should be able to expose them pretty easily.

  You can also quick sift pretty easily in ppro, then sort by usage values.

  there is also a dedicated find command for the Project Panel as well that offers booleans….so maybe this can be useful.
