  Very slow editing – using proxy files, but can’t move smoothly around timeline

  Hello all,

  This is my fist time in these forums. Hope you can help me.

  I am editing some HD footage in Premiere Pro CS4. The raw footage is 1080p, but I have replaced all of that with Offline/Proxy files which are highly compressed and only 654×368. The problem I’m having is that even with these small files I can’t scrub around the time line the way I would like. Everytime I love my position in the timeline, I have to wait 10-15 seconds for the top right screen to update.

  My machine isn’t great, but was top spec a couple of years ago and there’s loads of ram in there. I’m running Windows XP.

  I have tried turning off “Scale to Frame” and “Frame Blend” for the clips, but it doesn’t get any better. Any ideas what I can do to improve things? Is it maybe because it’s still trying to edit in 1080p even though the clips are much lower res? Is there a way to change that while working with the proxys, then change back when finished?

  Depending on the compression, it makes the file size smaller, but at the same time makes the computer work harder to decompress the frames for display.

  If you really want to work with offline proxies,maybe something reliable like DV codec set to widescreen would be a good choice.

  Proxies sound good but if you still have to export with the original footage to final destination on the same machine, you are back to square one.

  I agree, working with finish quality material is always preferable. But I’d say your more at square 1.5 or 2.

  Being able to make iterative creative decisions with predictable feedback during the editing process can be facilitated with the use of proxies.

  Spending the money on Neoscene is the best choice. But offline proxies are a good “free” way to deal with what you need to deal with initially.

  If you want to work with proxies smoothly, you need to set you sequence to the framesize of your proxy clips.

  If you need to crreate titles, etc… I would create a sequence set up for your “finish” framesize and nest the proxy sequence in it and scale it up.

  You would need to copy/paste the proxy clips into another sequence at the finish frame size anyway so they can be replaced with the “online” footage, and then you replace the proxy nested sequence with the online sequence and it’s
  done..

  Of course CineForm NeoScene is only 129 bucks. It seems it may pay for itself rather quickly.
