  • Setting Up New Capture Device?!

    Hi all,

I am in the process of switching from an Avid MC 5.03 Nitrix DX system to an Adobe based edit suite. Unfortunately we have come to the decision to switch after purchasing the new Avid system just over a year ago, and prior to my employment I might add (I would have a different recommendation for purchasing a new edit system…ugh!).

With that in mind we are trying to salvage what components we can and avoid purchasing a new breakout box or A/D converter if we can to capture from a Sony PVW-2800 Beta deck which is currently routed through the Nitris DX I/O. As a test we installed the production suite on a W7 tower and hooked up everything in terms of I/O etc. just as it was with the Avid system. I am hoping the Nitrix DX box can serve as our A/D even though we don’t need it for Avid encoding/decoding. The tower did recognize that a device was connected, but seem to be missing the drivers. We were able to find and download the Nitris DX drivers. After installing these, this time the device and drivers were recognized so I opened Premiere to check deck status, but no luck. I tried adjusting the capture settings to the specific Sony PVW2800 model, but that model is not listed in the drop down. Unforunately we don’t have any sort of internet connection in the location where the tower and Nitris DX live (at least for not another month due to construciton…) to allow Adobe to look for the ‘Device Info’. On that note, would it really require the Device Info for the Nitris DX box instead of the deck itself? Is there a way to input new device info or look it up online outside of Premiere?

Any other thoughts? Am I missing a step in terms of setting up a new capture device?

I have done a bit of research on alternate A/D converters if this doesn’t work, but I’m not giving up yet. At this point I’m bound and determined to force this Avid branded product to function as it should with any system!

    Thanks

    Lindsay,

Kudos on trying to make the most use of existing hardware.

I’ve never heard of anyone using Avid I/O hardware (like BOBs and cards) on non-Avid software. So I am not sure you’ll be able to use Nitris DX with Adobe apps.

Check out BlackMagic Intensity Pro ($200), Decklink Studio ($700), Multibridge Eclipse ($2400).

Decklink Studio seems like the easiest and more affordable capture device for PVW2800 (component video, XLR audio).

Thanks for your reply Alex. I must admit I’ve been pretty skeptical of the ability to use the Nitris with out the Avid, but have tried to remain optimistic. My best shot at getting it functioniong was to download and install the PPro Avid codecs as well as the Nitris device driver, but of course it still didn’t work.

Any thoughts on having Media Composer and Adobe installed on the same startup disk to be able to use MC just for DV capture? I have feeling that would bog the system down, but perhaps if only running one application at time we could get away with it.

I agree on the Decklink. In the bit of equiment digging I’ve done, it also stands out as a good alternate option.

    Thanks,
    Lindsay

I like that idea, can’t think of a reason it shouldn’t work smoothly; pretty sure I’ve heard of it being done.

Do you already have a system for CS5, or do you plan to order one? If so, have you decided on a vendor yet? (Yes, I sell CS5-optimized systems.)

(Quick question: why don’t you just sell the MC and get something like a Multibridge Eclipse for that money?)

I’m installing MC v 5.5 now to test capture that way with Adobe installed as well. Should work just fine I hope.

As far as a CS5 system we will most likely be building on an existing tower withe assistance of our IT department which is familiar with the Adobe Suite. And I have been looking at the Multibridge which seems to be a great equipment option. As my organization is a state entity, reselling equipment can be tricky…but it would be ideal. I’m hoping the head of IT here has some tricks up his sleeves and we dump the Nitris and invest in something more useful.

    Thanks for all your input,
    Lindsay
