Final cut .mov files to Adobe Premiere CS4 on a PC.
Posted by Justin Wiegand on April 1, 2011 at 6:30 pmI have FCP and logged some clips in a .mov format. I need to send these clips to someone who uses Adobe Premiere CS4 on a PC. This is not a project on a timeline that Im trying to send him, just the clips themselves. My question is… What format do I need to change my .mov files to in order for them to work on a PC using CS4?

April 1, 2011 at 10:46 pmThe Quicktimes should work just fine in Premiere Pro if exported same as source and not using a codec like Apple ProRes. At least that has worked in my experience going from FCP to CS5 Premiere, but I haven’t tried it with CS4. Otherwise I would guess the person using CS4 would need to find and download FCP codecs for Premiere which if needed would likely be available on Adobe’s site somewhere. Transferring the raw MXF files should also do the trick between FCP and PPro. Hope that helps!

April 2, 2011 at 2:07 amThey need the latest QuickTime – that will install ProRes DECODE only codecs.

April 4, 2011 at 1:30 pmUm…you won’t find any “FCP codecs” on Adobe’s site I’m afraid. Most of the codecs that FCP re-wraps to are only available to FCP users with the exception of the ProRes “read-only” codec that Jeff mentioned.
(don’t blame Adobe, address those cards and letters to “S. Jobs, Apple, Inc…)
There are several of these codecs that are recognized by AJA board users through AJA’s software, or yoou can get software from Calibrated Software that will enable you to read many of these codecs outside of a machine with FCP, but other than that, once the media has been rewrapped by FCP, it’s designed to stay there unless you choose to fully transcode to a generallly available legacy QT codec, or you use a truly cross-platform codec solution like CineForm.

April 4, 2011 at 2:57 pmTim – I don’t recall – does Premiere Pro CS4 work with ProRes if you install the codec (or the current QuickTime which installs it) on windows?

April 4, 2011 at 4:18 pmHi Jeff,
Actually PPro CS4 and CS5 just look at what’s installed in QT. There really isn’t any specific Adobe stuff involved in this, so having the ProRes read codec would depend on whether or not the user installed it with QT.
I’ve always used QT Pro for at least the last 4-5 years and the ProRes read codec is in there already (best 29.95 USD you can spend BTW people…).
For the standard, free QT install for Windows, once upon a time you had to track down the ProRes read codec and install it separately (also free), but these days I am not sure if it’s included or still separate…
So…that’s what I know…and what I don’t. 🙂

April 4, 2011 at 5:08 pmI’m sure it’s in windows with the default install, because I tested it with CS5.
Just didn’t know that it would work with CS4.

April 4, 2011 at 7:23 pmYup…it definitely does.
…in fact I have a video on AdobeTV where I edit a 90 minute timeline of ProRes with CS4.

July 14, 2011 at 5:40 pmHappy to find this thread.
I need to output a file that was edited on FCP, Apple ProRes422, so that someone in another city can put the footage into PC-based Premiere.
What would be the safest format for me to use, so that he has the best chance of this working on his PC?
Thanks.

July 14, 2011 at 7:15 pmAs I mentioned earlier in the thread, as long as they have an up to date installation of QT…send ’em the ProRes.
It works fine…I’ve used it on a WXP laptop…

July 14, 2011 at 7:39 pmTim, I believe you. But without naming names, I can assure you that some very big Avid shops in the national broadcast world do not have the latest QT codec and won’t, won’t, won’t get it. One wound up using a .wmv 320×180 file instead of the very high quality HD file – for national tv.
