  • What external drive should I tell a PC laptop user to get?

    Hi Adobe Premiere forum,

    I am a mac FCP user. I’m going to go to Moldova soon to help out some people there with their video editing. They are using PC laptops, HD flip cameras, Adobe Premiere, and at this point they have no external storage. I’m going to tell them to buy a drive, but I thought I’d inquire first about what a PC user might recommend.

    Their specs are:

    – Acer laptop 5738ZG;

    – Local disk D – total memory 416 GB and free space 172 GB

    – Local disk C – total memory 48.8 GB and free space 19 GB
    – Pentium Dual Core processor
    – ATI Radeon HD 4570 graphics card.
    – unclear if it has a firewire port or not

    I know that at least they need a drive. Do you think from these specs that I should also advise them NOT to work in HD from the Flip?

    Thank you in advance for your advice!

    Depending on the version of Windows installed, coupled with the version of Adobe Premiere installed, your experience will range from nearly impossible, to barely tolerable.

    Acer doesn’t show a firewire port on this laptop, so you’ll be relegated to a USB 2.0 drive.

    Not sure if this laptop has an express card slot, but if it does, I’d highly recommend an eSata card. That would allow you to use a external eStata drive at the minimum, or even a small RAID array.

    That’s what we use for portable storage, but Acer doesn’t list an ExpressCard slot, and photos indicate that there isn’t one. It’s really being deprecated, especially since USB 3.0, but it looks like this model is about 2 years old. Seems like it would still have a PCMCIA slot.
