Export Error – AME says disc full
I am getting a disc full error when attempting to export a sequence to one of my external drives. I have tried even a short 40 second DV sequence and have the same problem as with my regular HDV work. Finder shows over 700 GB free space on this drive. I can export to the internal drive or the other external drive. I have been using this workflow successfully for a couple of years now with this configuration using CS3 and now CS4. Any suggestions.
MBP 5.1, 2.8 Ghz, 4GB ram, 500GB System Drive, OS X 10.5.8
2 Free Agent 1TB external FW800 drives
System and program on int. drive, projects on one ext., media on the other ext.

Where is your scratch drive set?
A large export will create temporary data on a drive (usually the system drive) during the process.
Can you watch all your drives during export and see which one is filling up?
The other thing is the external drive itself…where is it from? Did you format it? If you’re on Windows and it’s formatted as FAT 32, your filesize will be limited to 2 or 4 Gigs (also true for any scratch drive…the drive doesn’t fill, but the file goes over the max size…)

This shouldn’t be a large export (test sequence only 40 seconds).
Media Cache is set to a folder on the same ext. drive that stores the captured video (different than the drive that holds project and output files. Scratch disks are set to that same drive as the captured video.
As for the external drives, they are both Seagate FreeAgent FW800 drives formatted for Mac OS Extended (and have been since they were new).
The odd thing is that this setup has been working well for a couple of years. I archive project files off to a different drive (same specs) and delete captured video (save the camera tapes for future use) to free up space. This problem started suddenly and I haven’t been able to find what I may have changed to initiate the problems.

It certainly sounds odd…
What’s been changed on your system lately?
These drives have been used before…and they’ve had times when they’ve had more data on them than they do currently?
Have you taken any sort of disk maintenance measures? (Transfer the data off and re-format the drive in case there’s a strange file fragment that is haunting it or something silly like that…)

Yes the drives are a little over two years old and have been near full a few times. I usually archive remaining projects and re-format the drives at the end of a school year. I was thinking that would need to be my next step of troubleshooting.

None taken. I am thankful for the help. I meant “thinking out loud” as a positive…like you were here throwing out ideas. Your suggestion about maintenance sent me back to Disc Utility. I had it check for repairs and it did find and repair a couple of errors and now the drive is working letting AME write exports to it. I guess since I wasn’t having other issues with the drive in terms of file management tasks, I didn’t think to let the built-in repair utility have a go at it. Definitely will go there first next time.
