  cs5 only captures MPEG not AVI

  Hi there,

  I have very recently upgraded from premiere pro 1.5 to CS5.

  I am capturing footage from a Sony Z1 (1080i) via an I-link/firewire cable.

  Everything I capture with CS5 is an MPEG Video File; whereas all my old footage was captured as AVI on pro 1.5.

  The new MPEG stuff is on average just half the size of the AVI files and doesn’t look as good.

  I’ve tinkered everywhere in CS5 and can’t seem to find a way to change the file type that it captures.

  Is MPEG video the default file type for CS5 capture and if so, why does it not look as crisp and clear as my old AVI files?

  I am very new to all this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  PPro 1.5 captured and converted to CineFormHD.

  You can still buy a CineForm plugin for CS5, but Premiere Pro has captured/edited HDV “native” for some time now…

  (HDV is MPEG…exactly what you are seeing in your system.)

  Right-click in the Program Monitor window and set Playback Resolution to FULL, this might help, since default is HALF. As Tim said though, the .mpeg file is native, just exactly what is on the tape.
