Footage darkened when imported to premiere
Posted by Kylie Laston on October 22, 2010 at 4:37 pmI imported some 35mm footage to premiere, in premiere it looks
much darker.. when I look at the footage in quick time before the
import it looks brighter, more vibrant and accurate to what I was
seeing at the color correction lab.Anyone know why this is happening and how to correct it?
My quality settings are set to high. It is imported in
HD with the intention of being transfered to XDCAMKylie Laston replied 15 years, 10 months ago 4 Members · 7 Replies -

What format was the original footage encoded with and what color space?

October 22, 2010 at 6:04 pmIs it possible that you are seeing a gamma shift introduce by an FCP / Quiktime export?
I would also try a quick sample export from After Effects using a 709 comp to Quicktime Animation to see if the problem is still there afterwards.

October 22, 2010 at 6:14 pmI directed the film so I’m not the most technically savy, I don’t own a copy of After Effects.. this doesn’t have to do with the way it looks exported. I’m saying in adobe while I’m editing it looks darken when imported not exported. but when exported it does maintain the darkened look… also interestingly enough, before the video is rendered it displays its original colors.

October 23, 2010 at 6:00 pmQuicktime is typically the culprit. Quicktime gamma errors just seem like they’ll be around until QTX is completely implemented (hopefully QTX has this problem solved…) and QT7 and earlier are banished forever…
Are you watching the footage on the same monitor in each case?
…and are you Windows or Mac?

accurately to how I saw it originally at the color correction labs.
