CS5 & PPro & Macbook Pro?
Posted by Dave Egan on October 2, 2010 at 4:01 pmWill CS5 Premier Pro (and CS5 Encore) work on my MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with a GeForce 8600M GT graphics card?
Thanks…

I figured I’d be fine.
It was in the system requirements for Premier that were particular about the graphics card. I was able to find this link which lists the Adobe approved video cards, and mine is on the list:

October 5, 2010 at 12:17 amThe graphics cards page you’re looking at is for Photoshop CS5. If you want Mercury Engine GPU acceleration for Premiere Pro, I’m afraid the MacBook Pro won’t help you. The video card inside the MacBook Pro is not listed on the Premiere Pro hardware page here:
https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/systemreqs/
Sorry. You’ll only be able to take advantage of the software acceleration for Mercury with the MacBook Pro. You’ll still be able to edit just fine, just no acceleration from the GPU of the video card.

This is the info I was looking for. I was actually on that page, but neglected to scroll down to see the supported cards.
When you wrote:

Did you mean Mac Pro?

October 5, 2010 at 10:31 pmHi Dave,
What is meant is unless the system has a compatible GFX card for the Hardware GPU acceleration for the Mercury Engine, then it will work in Software mode, which still works very well, but you will most likely require setting the preview playback resolution down to allow for realtime with effects.
It doesn’t matter whether you are on a MacBookPro or a MacPro.
No MacBook Pro’s have compatible GFX cards so if you work on a MBP you will only ever (as of the MacBookPro Apple builds of 6th October 2010) have the Mercury Engine in Software mode available.
Hope that clears up some of the Mercury Confusion. 🙂

That DEFINITELY clears up the confusion.
• I don’t have a compatible GFX card
• It’ll work very well in software mode but set the preview playback resolution down for realtime effectsGreat stuff. Right to the point.
Will I still benefit from 64 bit processing (with Snow Leopard of course) without the GPU acceleration?
Thanks…

October 6, 2010 at 3:21 amCS5 won’t run unless you are in a 64-bit OS. It will utilize all of your ram so the 64-bit access to more than 3.5 Gig of RAM will mean yes you will benefit.

October 6, 2010 at 4:06 amOne more thing. You can always make a feature request to support your particular video card for Mercury Engine playback. Do so by using the Feature Request/Bug Report Form here: https://bit.ly/ck4LbS
