Premiere CS5 and h264 – Sluggish Playback
I’m a long time Final Cut Pro user, just now considering a switch to Premiere CS5 due to much advertised benefits for editing footage captured with Canon DSLR cameras.
So I’m testing Premiere on both Windows 7 and Mac OSX and failing to notice any significant speed advantage as compared to Final Cut. There’s no faster-than-realtime rendering, and worst of all, playback on the second desktop monitor is extremely sluggish. If it’s turned on, playback on the canvas is also sluggish. I have to turn off external video, then canvas plays fine.
My current graphics is an ATI 4890 on a Mac Pro… I suspect this is due to lack of hardware acceleration. Can someone confirm that all the benefits of switching to Premiere CS5 will only be available if there’s a CUDA-ready nVidia videocard?

That’s correct. You’ll only have software acceleration without one of the cards listed on this page:
https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/systemreqs/
To get the best performance, use a single monitor with these video cards. In the mean time, you might want to try lowering the display quality for the Source and Program monitors.
You’ll want to upgrade to 5.0.5, as well.
