Im a cs3 user but I have had the opportunity to use cs5 on my clients workstation for my current project (maybe my lack of knowledge is the reason I’m having issues).

Either way my audio is misbehaving and I dont know why. I go to audio gain and normalize to -6 and yet when its done processing i play the clip and it spikes up to +3?????????? WTF I’m so frustrated I can barely speak. If I try to tweak all audio by hand on a 90 minute project its gonna take forever. Any ideas? The audio level is zeroed out and the layer level is zeroed out– i just dont get it

    Hey Cody,
Have you updated to 5.02? It solves a lot of issues like this. Try that, then let me know if you are still having problems.

I’m afraid you may have to go a bit more into the technical stuff.

Audio normalize is automated, so you don’t always get what you want. it’s a bit like auto level. It also sounds very unnatural most of the time, and you lose too much dynamics at the same time making everything monotonic.

My advice would be to get deeper into the dynamics effects, and look at the compression panel, and assuming that you are not familiar with compression…

Here is a tutorial about compression to get you going. It’s worth spending the time mastering compression, you’ll be using it for just about anything, once you get a handle on it, you’ll absolutely love it.

Of course, there are a few rules of thumb. Mainly, try to keep attenuation below 6 db or things will start to sound unnatural.
