Hello, I’ve been putting together a workstation for my news team to produce packages. Our workflow is such that we still run everything out to BetaCam tapes, so we need to capture/output SD video. But we’re shooting on HD cameras, so all footage needs to be scaled back to 45% in post. The computer I’m working with came pre-installed with a BlackMagic Decklink Studio 2 card, and we’re using CS5.

Unfortunately, the BM presets for Premiere knock out all functionality to playback unrendered footage, making it impossible to edit things that haven’t been rendered. And since we’re scaling back all footage to 45%, EVERYTHING needs to be rendered. That makes it just impossible to edit.

What I’m wondering is, what capture solutions allow us to work with video that’s unrendered (IE: no shitty custom presets like BM has). It doesn’t need to input/output HD, only SD, but it should be broadcast quality. I’ve worked with DVCam Decks with the Firewire upgrade, but they’re like $3000 in total. If there’s an internal solution that’s as consistant, but cheaper, I’d appreciate it.

Your question will be well discussed in the Blackmagic forum. Depending on your computer you can still edit without rendering. I have intensity pro and have no problem doing the same thing, The clips show yellow in CS5 and red in CS4 being 1080 or 1440 converting to 720 but it plays realtime
