Hey guys,
I’ve been losing my mind with my new version of CS5 having upgraded from CS3. I’ve been trying to capture a friends DV footage to create a kayak video. I’m not sure if it’s because it was filmed on a different camera to the capture device but CS5 refuses to detect scenes. Having had this problem before in CS3 I resorted to the same method I had used then, dragging the clips to the timeline, cutting out bits I wanted then copying and pasting them back into different bins in an effort to sort them. After doing all this i went to arrange my sorted clips to find that it hadn’t saved the “razored out” section of the clip I wanted, but the entire “source” clip that had been in the timeline. I never had this problem in CS3. I then tried to copy and paste shortened clips into After Effects but had the same problem, it would copy the entire original clip rather than the specific part i had sectioned then copied. I tried making them into subclips and modifying them into “source” clips but with no luck. FRUSTRATING. I understand what is happening but not why. Something so simple shouldn’t have a complicated method. But does it? Any help would be great.

I can offer a solution to your after effects situation.
In ppro CS5 you can select a clip right click on it and “replace with after effects composition” it will do what you are wanting for you and add the dynamically linked comp in place of the original clip in the timeline.
Not sure why the DV signal is not being scene detected? Are you sure the camera was buttoned on and off. (as per the way it recognized a ‘scene’?)
Are you copying the edited clip from the time line and pasting it into an open comp? It sounds like you might be making in out selections in the source monitor and copying it as a source file, not a cut down clip that sits in the timeline? I may be misinterpreting your explanation…

I’ll give that a try. I’m dragging the entire clip into the timeline then razoring out bits I want, dragging them back into my bin, but when I go and look at them in the bin the entire original clip is in there, not just the piece I’ve razored, highlighted and dragged. I’ve been careful to only highlight the piece of the clip I want also. In regard to the scene detection issue, I’m not sure as I wasn’t the person who filmed the footage.

Thanks for the reply by the way. It turns out I can’t “replace with after effects composition” because it would “require Adobe Production Premium”. If I cut a clip into a 3 second segment I can right click, change to a sub clip, rename and put it back in the bin, then drag it back from the bin to the timeline and it is now still a 3 second duration clip(this seems like a step that was unnecessary in CS3). However when I copy that subclip and paste it in AE it pops back up as an 8GB 39 minute duration clip that I started with.

What is copied over to AE is the full clip as the source. That is expected behaviour. What you may be missing when Pasting the copied clip into a new comp, the clip pastes in as a precomposed nest in the new comp. Select the layer and hold alt the tap the home key. It will push the in point of the nest to the head of the composition where you should be able to see the in and out section of what you copied over.
I just tried it and it works. This is how CS3 used to work too. there is a composition with the same name as the clip, that is the entire clip. thats the way it works.
If you want to only have a small section then render it out as a cut out clip. Going uncompressed would be best for maintaining quality, but might hurt in file size.
