Premiere Pro CS3 preview window NOT ACCURATE for 720
Using Premiere Pro CS3 and creating Flash videos. This is extremely frustrating and Adobe does not take responsibility for their bugs.
Since I switched to the 720 format I have been flying blind. I have to actually export (between 1 and 3 hours) to see if what I saw in Premiere Pro is actually what is on the video,
Often the actual video includes things in background photos that I did not see, OR the background photo does not extend fully and I have blank space. I am flying blind because I picked Premiere Pro CS3.
The preview inside the program is NOT showing the full video. I have been using Premiere Pro for many years and this issue only started when I decided to do wide screen stuff since Youtube now supports it. Yes, I set the video up to be 720
It is like random hit and miss, sometimes things are where they are supposed to be, other times I might have blank space on the bottom or the top or the sides.

This is so outrageous and unprofessional of Adobe to refuse to fix their buggy software. In the latest video I had to move peoples feet down below where I could see them in order to go to the bottom edge of the video. AND this was also the case in the preview window for actually doing the export to flash. It also was NOT ACCURATE regarding what was going into the exported Flash video!
I had to export the video then look at where I had blank black at the bottom of the screen, then go back into Premiere Pro and lower the background GUESSING HOW MUCH and then taking another hour to export (a lower quality export so it would be one hour instead of THREE!). After several tries it FINALLY came out OK.
It is a shame about Adobe. It used to be a decent company..
Is there a competitive product that will do what Premiere Pro will do?

Hey Steve,
Doesn’t like anything I’ve seen. If you are running anything later than XP, go back to it since CS3 was built before the Vista / Win 7 days. And of course, the stupid question, the preview is set to fit?
Try updating your video drivers as well.
Other than that, I’d love to see a screen cap of your preview, and export settings.

I am running XP Pro. This all started when I changed to 720×480 and when I set up the project I picked the 720×480. Now it only lets me see the middle of the actual video and I have to guess what is at the edges.
I tried changing the preview and went back to “Fit” since nothing else fixed the problem.
The preview in the export shows exactly the same as the preview window in the program.

It appears you are working with HD video that dimensions are 1280×720 but you are attempting to edit in 720×480.
You must select the correct video sequence to edit in that matches the video footage you are using. Otherwise you will get the kinds of results you are seeing – middle of image and not the full frame.
The source screen shows the clips in their native shape and size.
The program show what’s going on with clips in the sequence. If they are not a perfect dimension match (or frame rate) then you will be seeing things differently from the source to the program.
This is how all NLE applications work and is not a bug.
Start a new project and select the sequence that matches your video clips. Sounds like it might be 1280×720 at 29.97fps. There is a HDV preset for that.
Let us know if it works better this way. You could be facing a situation where you are trying to use a version of PPro that was made before the format you are working with was made so it might need to be upgraded. Sadly that would probably mean a new computer to meet the requirements and at least windows 7 64-bit as CS5 will not install on a 32-bit OS and is not compatible with XP Pro.
These are just the facts of technology and not the fault of Adobe. Keep the bashing to “technology moving faster than the public can keep up with”, not “Adobe”.

Thank you for your suggestions, but all I did was change from the 640 option to the 720. I am using the same cameras etc.
If the 720 were not offered by this version then it would not be one of 4 default presets to choose when starting a video.

Are you using the 4×3 presets or the widescreen presets?

OK, I am using the widescreen preset which is supposed to make it 720×480. I have posted the video (just released last night) to my profile page here on this site. Here is the screen shot from Premiere Pro preview window.
I will try to embed the video here as well…
Notice how I had to move the feet down below where I could see them in order to have them positioned correctly in the video. Youtube picked a different frame to use for the video rather than the beginning, but if you click on the video then you can just pause it to compare what I was seeing in Premiere Pro and what was actually on the video.

Are you using “scale to frame size” on your clips?

I am using DV import by connecting the camera by firewire. I manually scale the different “Green screen” videos to the size and location that I want them. The problem is that my workspace inside of Premiere Pro is not giving me an accurate representation of what the video will look like.
