Please correct me if I am wrong but our persistent web searching indicates that as of May 21, 2010 there is only one notebook computer that meets all the specifications of Adobe and Nvidia to optimize CS5 as described in https://tv.adobe.com/watch/short-and-suite/gpu-acceleration-and-nvidia/

We are tired after many years of being on the bleeding edge and so we aren’t inclined to lay out well over $5000 that the two sellers are quoting as of today on the GraVT i7/3.33, which each proclaims is the “World’s Fastest 3D Notebook”?!?

    Here are the Sellers links:
    https://www.ltmicro.com/product-view.aspx?i=2295

    https://www.thedvshop.com/product-view.aspx?i=2295

Note that everything after these sellers website address is the same.

The “brand” name displayed is GraVT. Our search brought up a Swedish gamer site https://gravt.se/ and, alas, we don’t speak Swedish!

In order to reach the 8GB RAM recommended by Adobe to optimize Quad cores the price would be over $5K.

If any of the more mainstream notebook manufacturers can meet these specs and beat these prices than we would be very interested in knowing where they are?

Actually both those notebooks listed don’t meet Adobe’s specs for CS5 MPE, unless you hack Ppro CS5 because the GTX 285M ain’t on the approved list

I would be watching for a PC based laptop with USB 3, which would allow for some very fast I/O rates from an external Raid box. I would think that we will see qualified laptop systems soon that will sell for under $2,500. Sure hope so!

Brian appears to be right. The GeForce 285 is listed as optimal but not the GeForce 285M. Pity!

As to USB 3.0, it will certainly be an improvement over USB 2.0 but the ExpressCard slot on many notebooks can be configured right now for up to 200MB per second sustained with RAID 5 and eSATA plugs also available right now are well over Adobe’s specs.

The real issue today is the video cards that Abobe/Nvidia certify as “optimal” for CS5. If they don’t get some high powered notebooks into the mix, they will miss a fantastic opportunity to surge ahead of FCP.

The problem with the laptop chipsets is that the number of Cuda stream processors is reduced for instance the workstation/desktop video cards have 192 to 240 streamprocessors, the mobile chipsetts have 128 and less, probably to keep heat down
Any laptop should have at least one or more eSata ports plus the express card slot, the ones with USB 3 ports could add fast arrays like Bob mentioned also give enhanced I/O capabilities with external video monitoring capabilities, like with the new BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle(USB3), and Matrox MX02 family, AJA I/O Express both use express card slots.

We can see that though the notebooks have not been designed for optimal usage they still can run CS5. I will wait for real world reports on whether notebook CS5 can playback a 3 channel HD timeline.

It isn’t the Herculean 8 channels that Adobe showed at NAB but it is certainly adequate for a common sense videographer to use in mobile/field applications.

    Marching on to MILSPEC 🙂
