For a real-time external monitor I know that the intensity card and the Matrox Mini will output in real-time, but their presets must be used. So if I edit AVCDHD with Premiere CS5 AVCDHD presets, I get
great real-time performance, but if I use the Blackmagic presets (I have an intensity card)the performance not good. Is there any way to get real-time output on an external monitor (HDMI) using premiere presets? Otherwise what good are these devices if I have to use their codec? I have an I7-920 system with a GTX 285 card.

The simplest way is to set your second display as extended in the OS display properties, then tell Premiere to use it for preview. That also may require a DVI to HDMI cable/adapter.

That’s the only solution that won’t require making presets but it’s definitely not the same as using a dedicated card.
