problem importing .mpeg-file
Hi,
I have a file that I have shot in hd on a proffessional camera, that during import to the computer from tape became an .mpeg-file. I am trying to import it to Premiere. This program as far as I can tell should be able to import this file, but no. I have spend hours now trying every way I can think of but no luck. Anyone got any idea what to do. It worked before, some weeks ago when I tryed it. I have tried to make a new project and import it, but no luck. The file is about 6 GB, so it’s big, but that should be fine no? Greateful for any tip!

Hi Nina,
Having the .mpeg file suggests that the video was captured from an HDV tape via Firewire (1394), does that sound right? Choose an HDV preset that matches the video format (720p, 1080i or 1080p and correct framerate) and the file should work. In fact, it should import into any project, it would just redline if using incorrect project settings, I don’t know why you can’t even import it.

Thanks for trying to help Jeff! Yes thats right. I choose a HDV preset 1080i, (I think that is what I recorded at but am not totally sure) but then the program freezes and I have to close it down… But it doesn’t work…

What brand/model cam was it recorded on?

It was recorded on a Sony HVR-Z1 camcorder. I managed to import the file before, but not now. So strange and super annoying…

I experienced this with my mac version not long after the 4.2.1 update.
To fix it I uninstalled ppro. Rebooted. Installed ppro and let it do the update on it’s own. It imprted right after and was on 4.2.1 so I don’t know how it got corrupted but the reinstall got me up again.
About 40mins (Internet speed for update download may vary time) in total.

I just got this tip from a friend that.mpeg + premiere may cause trouble together and so better to convert the file in a software called Streamclip, that’s free.
I installed the software, but it doesn’t seem to like files over 4 GB a piec and i don’t know how to devide my file into smaller chunks since my whole problem is that i can’t open it in my editing program… oh… so complicated…

If it was recorded on a Z1 there should be no problem using the file, you didn’t mention what version Ppro you are using, you could try reinstalling as suggested, but first try rebuilding the Plug-in cache file, you do that by holding down the shift key when starting Ppro till the project selection screen appears, it basically making a new preferences file, this can sometimes get corrupted and cause all kinds of problems. -
Thanks! I tried holding down the shift key like you said, but it didn’t help unfortunately… I’m not so keen to reinstall since i remember it beeing veru hard to install the program from the start. I have Ppro CS3 (for pc).
