  Encoding Times in Premiere Pro CS3

  Hello,
  I started using Premiere CS3 about a year ago. Currently, i shoot videos to upload onto youtube. I have been using the Adobe media encoder, with the H.264 compression codec that comes with the premiere. I am looking to speed up the time it takes to render and export the file. Currently , it takes about 1.5 hours per VBR pass to render a 5-1/2 minute video. I have a pretty modern PC, so i wouldnt think that is holding it back, i will list PC specs at bottom of post.

  The adobe encoder settings that i use and have found that produce good quality for youtube are as follows:
  Format: H.264
  Dimensions: either 720×480, or 640×360
  frame rate: 30fps
  field order: None (progressive)
  pixel aspect ratio: Square
  profiles: main
  level:3.0
  Bitrate encoding: VBR, 2 Pass
  Target Bitrate: 5
  max bitrate: 5
  noise reduction: 7.4

  I was looking into maybe installing a Matrox CompressHD, but i havent found any solid reviews as to its performance on a PC.

  i would like anyone who has experience with an Matrox CompressHD or any comparable product please leave some feedback about its performance.

  Also, i’d like to get an opinion of my PC setup and feedback as to any recommendations on upgrades that would benefit performance

  any advice would be much appreciated.

  Hi Colby,

  While H.264 is known to render more slowly than other codecs, 1.5 hours sounds extreme for a 5-minute clip. I noticed that “Noise Reduction” is being used – was that default, or did you change the setting? I imagine that could add considerably to the render time.

  I was rendering a YouTube clip for my kid the other day using a third-party encoder and it wanted to take about 25 minutes, so I aborted and used the Adobe encoder in CS3 and it was quicker.

  I checked and also found that all the CompressHD reviews seem to be Mac-based, but on the other hand, I’ve not seen any bad press regarding CompressHD with the PC, so I’d expect similar performance and quality.

  That said, please note that since it uses the Adobe Media Encoder as the front end, you MUST use Premiere CS4 4.2 with CompressHD, it will not work with CS3.

  Thanks- I’ll try reducing the noise reduction; this was not the default , i think i was experimenting with it and set it like that.

  Thanks for the suggestion on the noise reduction, looks like that was it. Wow, i cut the noise reduction completely. Now , for a 5 minute video ; render time is estimated at around 8 minutes.
