Video Output export to tape to older VX1000
Any suggestions appreciated:
I did a short 10 sec video with audio and want to export it out to an older VX1000. It’s been ages since I did that, since most of my output goes to DVD. And the camera is in working order recording live to tape and I’ve captured images from it.
Have checked all the help instructions for CS3. The programme recognizes the camera in VCR mode and “device control” shows active. In the export to video dialog box it shows the “device” is “ready”, it rolls tape – BUT the camera is not placed into record mode, and rather shows the “white” dot, rather than the “red” dot indicating it is recording. A message in the programme shows that the device is playing, (but not recording). When the camera is “turned on” the video will not play in the sequence timeline. When the camera is “turned off”, the sequence plays.
Perhaps my brain is fried, or just too old, but I can’t it set up properly.

It has been awhile, but I remember enabling record mode as pressing 2 buttons on the touch pad at the same time…the Play button and one other button next to it.

I’ve checked the manual for the VX1000, and your remembrance is accurate. CS3 in export to tape mode does control this camera device in just that way: it turns on recording in the pause mode and then starts to roll the tape after a short time – BUT there is no video signal flow received to record from Premiere. CS3 does recognize the correct in and out points.
I must be missing a setting somewhere in Premiere to flow the video to the camera. I think the last time I did record to tape, it was in 6.5 – but I did get a video signal into the camera. I remember that much.

Have you tried to start record on the camera manualy and play the time line after your camera is running?
If you do’nt receive the videosignal in your camera, something is wrong with the firewire cable or firewire input of your camera. See you ‘DV in’ on the camera display?Phocas Kroon

You must have the correct Project Setting for export to work.
If you are in the Netherlands, the correct Project setting will be either DV-PAL Standard (or Widescreen) 32HZ. You should be able to simply play the timeline and see the movie in the VX1000 viewfinder. -
I believe that the DV tape MUST have some timecode on it first – a blank tape will not record using Print to Tape. Put the camera in CAMERA mode and record about a minute with the lens cap on, then rewind a bit, to :30 for instance, then try the Print to Tape.

If everything is ok you should be able to see timeline playback in the viewfinder, make sure the playback settings are set properly in the Project dropdown menu under ProjectSettings, General/Playback settings, the “Realtime” and “Export” “External Device” should both reflect a DV Setting, If you were able to capture usually the device control options under capture is usually set right, but you might want to check that you have Sony and VX1000 set.

Folks – thanks so much for the replies.
I’ve tried following through each setup instruction of CS3 – project and preferences. These “look okay”.
I also created an AVI movie which I then imported into “Movie Maker” and still got no images sent to the camera, though the programme recognized and could control the VX1000 camera as did CS3.
I then copied the short avi movie to a memory stick and moved it to a second computer. (I have my edit computer offline from the Internet – don’t know how important that is these days.) I used the same firewire cable to connect the camera to the second computer. Opened Movie Maker and voila – instant recognition of this older camera. I played out the avi files as a movie output using Movie Maker, and it was transferred, albeit, the audio and images were not as precisely synchronized out as with CS3. But I did get it to tape.
But I don’t want to have to do this in the future. It was a short lead-in (music and text image) to be added to a pre-existing tape in post, so the sync wasn’t a big problem. Still, in this latter second computer scenario there was no problem with the firewire cable. The image did not play on the VX1000 while I had played it in the MM timeline, but the image was visible while recording to tape.
I’m a little lost in this at the moment, but as I mentioned earlier I was mainly preparing video for application to DVDs, and just didn’t have to record to tape. Perhaps there is a conflict of which I’m unaware on the other editing computer, but I was running no other programme at that time. Will have to think further….I guess.
