Source Edit Plays fine, but timelines are slow – no effects.
The title pretty much says it all. I started a new project in Premiere CS4 and imported a lot of MTS files from a Canon camera. All the imported movies play nice and snappy in the source edit window, but the edit window/program window – the window on the right where you see the result of your timeline editing – that is real sluggish and drops most frames. Audio runs but the video only updates every second or so. There are no effects or transforms or anything – just cuts at this point. Where can I look to find the problem? BTW this is my second project, and I had no such problems with the first one.

Do your Sequence settings match the Properties of your source video exactly? Is there a red (needs rendered) line just below the Work Area bar in the timeline?

Yes there is a red line. I can hit ENTER to make it render but I used to be able to play back very smoothly right away until I added color correction and titles.
Sequence settings: I set them all to 24p b/c that is what I will ultimately render. How can I change that after I have already have edits in each sequence?
Should I set the sequences to match the source material and then convert to 24p when I render?

Okay I just posted a response but it does not show. Sorry if this is double post – I am new here.
I am trying to go Sequence > Sequence Settings but the main part at the top with the frame rate is grayed out. All I’ve been able to figure out so far is to make a new sequence and copy the contents of the original one to it.
BTW I am shooting in “Cine Mode” on a Canon AVCHD camera (HF20) and I want to end up with 24p. What is a good workflow for that, in terms of frame rates, when to convert, are plugins required, etc….

Your Sequence preset should be either “AVCHD 1080i30 Anamorphic” or
“AVCHD 1080i30”. Not sure what the Cine mode is on your camera but it might involve the Pixel Aspect Ratio and the Anamorphic option (1.333 par). Copy/paste all the clips in your current timeline to the new sequence…no red line should be the results.
