Need help with XH A1 hdv to PP CS3 to Encore dvd process
Hi,
I am a Cannon still camera guy who got a XH A1 as a gift. After many hours of looking through forums and reading books I tried to make a dvd in encore with no luck. My video contiunes to look crapy.
My process was to:
1. Shoot in HD 60i.
2. Capture in PP CS3 HD 60i project.
3. Import HDV into a SD NTSC 16:9 WS project, scale it down.
4. Export out Uncompressed AVI file(No recompress, Max bit, NTSC WS 16:9) even tried AnoMorph. 1.333 HD.
5. Import UC. AVI file into a Encore SD NTSC project and burn a dvd.The end result is not good. Nothing is nice an sharp and sometimes it gets jaged especially with motion of objects in frame.
I have read through the forums and have not found what you would call a work flow for this or a good place for me to start.
As stated above I am a still photographer and work mainly with PS so this is all new ground for me. Don,t want to spend a lot of money on things already have Adobe Master Collection for my still work, just have some decent DVDs to share with friends and family.
Newbie to video world needs guidance.

Your workflow seems fine. The downconversion in Premiere is not the best solution. Read the post above for details.
As for what you are describing as “jaggy”, it’s probably simply interlacing lines, and that’s only going to be seen in computer playback, not on on TV or projection.
No way around it other than shooting progressive. You could de-interlace, but you would lose resolution in the process.

The downconversion in most NLEs is not too hot, it seems that everyone thought that most outputs would be to a HD disk format and didn’t bother with quality downconversion, There are a few ways to get decent SD DVDs, 1. is to use the camera’s HDV to DV downconversiion and capture as DV, edit as DV and burn to DVD, the downconverted video is usually better than the video from most DV cams. 2nd way is to use open source software like VirtualDub with the Lanczos3 filter for downconversion(There are various places on the net with info on this, just search for “VirtualDub HDV downconversion”) another way is to use a intermediate codec and output to dvd from that.

Thank you for the replys from my post but I am still a little fuzzy here.
Vince:
1. Vince I do not see the link for the post you refered to.2. The Video looks clean when I first import it from camera or drop it into a SD timline in PP. After I turn it into a uncompressed AVI from PP and drop it in Encore and burn DVD thats when the video starts looking bad. On my computer and on all 3 HDTV’s in the house.
3. Let me put it this way, my friends kid with a $700.00 canon that 3 months old that shoots HD video an some cheap software he uses makes cleaner video.
4. The video is just fuzzy most of the time and somtimes zaggy depending on the settings when exporting from PP. The best image so far is when Droping into a 4:3 timeline manually scaled down to about 40% then rendered uncompressed AVI, no recompress, Anomorphic 1.3, 1080×720. That method so far has produced the best image. Which is not saying much about quality.
5. If it does no get any better Then time to buy 1D from cannon.

1. I agree the down conversion in PP CS3 is lousy, but I have that software already for my still photography work. So the solution is to figure out the best way to use what I have.2. If this were for professional work money would be spent for other software. This is just to document some traveling with the family and any thing I think looks cool.
Since I am new to the video world this could all be operator error form be missing one little step. Please read this and if you have questions about what I am doing and can help let me know. I would just like to burn a DVD that looks decent. Besides if I can not make something that looks different the wife might not get me anymore cool gifts.

One reason is the kiss principle, edit in hd(Whatever flavor), let the software downconvert and author, burn DVD
If you are using a normal NTSC DVD player its going to end up as 720×480 anamorphic for SD WS, which can be about 500 tvlines depending about the bitrate used to encode, thats why one of the paths that can be used is to downconvert in the cam and edit as DV, you will still get some artifacts, but minimized its the nature of the beast at DV resolution.
Another way is to edit in HDV, save as HD mpeg2 or other HD flavor on a USB drive and playback with a WD player(if you have HDMI inputs on your TVs) which will give full resolution
