  selecting background

  is there any way to apply an effect to only part of an image without exporting each frame into photoshop?
  what i want to do is select the background only and apply distorting to it while the image in the foreground remains in tact. is there anything i can do? say making a mask or duplicating a clip???
  until then i guess its off to photoshop with ALOT of frames..

  After Effects, and rotoscoping or keying.
