I’m working with a large project in CS3 and many of my source files are on external harddrives.

Once before when I opened the project file (with the hardrives plugged in and recognized by my computer) I got a “where is (file name)” window and needed to re direct my computer to where all the files were. (I had changed no file locations or anything which is the strange part).

I went through and re-located and in some cases re-cut my whole project and was glad to have that behind me.

THEN, today, I opened up the project again (after just working on it five hours ago) and the same thing. ALL my files (every sound effect, every song, every video file) is reported as “offline” while they are in the exact same spots they have always been and, to my knowledge, I’ve moved NOTHING around.

It really has me confused and I’d be VERY greatful for some pointers. Thank you,

    -Chris

Did the hard drive letter change?

Unless they were assigned manually, they will take the next available letter in the order that you plug them in.

The work around is to assign a letter further in the alphabet. (starting with (m n, etc.)

The easiest way to right click on my computer and go to manage (or if the icon isn’t there: Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer management) , then go to disk management in storage. Right click on the particular disk and change letter.

I always wondered why Premiere doesn’t use relative paths, but there may be a reason that escapes me…
