In the near future I’ll be using the Sony HDR-HC9 to shoot film, which uses AVCHD which means I’ll have to upgrade from CS3 to CS4.

The main issue why I am bringing this question up is because I’m using Red Giant’s Instant HD to upconvert some of the DV footage I have to HD and when I export a 5 minute clip through Adobe Media Encoder (using a Quicktime format with H264 codec at 1280 x 960) the rendering is slow and often just stops about 25% of the way through. Shorter clips operate the same speed but do finish. I’ve got a hunch I’ll need to upgrade the RAM but the processor is what I need to figure out if that is what is causing the stoppage during rendering.

It could be a memory issue. 2GB is not much if you are running windows. Windows takes way to much resources to begin with. If you are running Vista then you can upgrade a lot, but if you are running Xp then you can only get another 2GB, which only one of that 2GB will be available to use. If you are using Vista then you should definetly upgrade your Ram. Vista is a memory pig, I would reccomend at least having 6GB of Ram is any Vista System. More if you can afford it. More memory when editing is always better.

Your processor is just fine. I run a Mac Pro with two quad cores built in and they render just fine, so I doubt the processor has anything to do with it.

You might try rendering it out as a different format, something on par with what you want and then try to render that file to a finished format. I have had files not want to render before so I have done that and it seems to work.

Ram is so cheap right now….go get some more now!

Not the answer, but a question, How good is the blowup? Are you going to 1080? 720? Do you have a frame with a CU of a face oe eyes and a frame of something with a high contrast diagonal line you could share? I need to do a bunch of his, although it will be on a Dell Vostro Q9550 with 3gb ram with XP and CS3

Thank you Lucas for the information I will upgrade the RAM and see if that will work.

George do you want a picture of the footage of the SD to HD conversion?

a befoe and after would be great. I just upsized a few sd dv clips in an HDV project, and the results are acceptable, not great.
