  • Which codec is best for SD miniDV tape capture?

Posted by Matthew Krumins on March 23, 2009 at 1:36 am

I am trying to establish which codec is best for standard def miniDV tape capture. I’ve been told the DV codec is the worst to use however other codecs such as Animation create file sized that are just not practical. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance, Krumo

Capture is simply data transfer from tape to hard drive…no changes are available. The DV codec works fine as an acquisition format. No advantage to converting to a different codec.

    Hi!
If you have a lot of layers and grafics it can be wise to use a better codec for renders. It also depends what your output is.

So for a project where we are digitizing sd footage to be re-cut and output to DVD, the DV codec will do as good a job as any other?

Thanks for your advice guys, i appreciate it

    Hi!
If you only are going to do some simple edits and grafics is native DV the way to go.
