Strnge After Effects Anomaly
I was working on a scene where I had created a solid layer and on it I place the effect particle playground (AE 6.5 Pro). I used a second layer for the particle map, a .tif. I made the adjustments I needed and hit the space bar to play it. Nothing happened then I hit it again. Nothing. I clicked on the timeline thinking I had clicked somewhere out of after Effects. As I did that I noticed that name of the effect I was using was gone from the list in the timeline that shows the effects on a layer. The curser was there and my hitting space had cleared it. I thought this was weird I didn’t know you could rename the stock effect in the timeline I thought it was only layer names. I must of hit enter somewhere along the line. My clicking off of it then kept the name blank and I thought nothing of it, except that I would need to remember to type in the name of the effect so I wouldn’t forget what it was. I went on working a bit more and then I went back to make some adjustments to the particle playground effect and I couldn’t find it. See, I thought, I should’ve renamed it right when it happened. I had several different solid layers for various reasons so I went through them looking for the one with the effect on it. I couldn’t find it. The weird thing is though, the effect is still working. I went through all my layers and the only effect not listed is the one I erased the name of. I even pin pointed the layer that it’s on, It shows the layer as not having the effect on it. It’s clean of all effects. But the comp window shows it working. It’s almost perfect but not quite and it took me some time to get the settings to where I wanted them but now I cant get any of the settings to show up at all, in any window. I cant make any adjustments, I cant delete the effect to start over.
I hate when that happens.

There are a few ways to solve your problem.
Try soloing layers until you see the layer with the effect appear. Select that layer then hit F3 to bring up the effect controls, or hit E to reveal all effects for that layer. You can rename the effect there to anything you want. Make sure that switches, not modes, are visible by hitting F4 to toggle between switches and modes.
Or if you keyframed the effect, select all suspect layers, then hit U. Look for the effect in the timeline.
If you did not keyframe the effect, select all suspect layers then hit UU and look for the effect.

I did try all of that, the funny thing is that it never showed on my layer that I had an effect on it . It looked like the layer was clean but the effect was obviously going on and it had keyframes as well but they didn’t show up on the timeline.
I quit for the day and opened the project today and everything was back to normal. Thanks for your help though!
