    Hey guys

We’re expanding and we need to pick up a quadcore g5. Any advice on memory? I’m on a dual 2.7 and we put in 4.5 gigs of memory and its quick.
Also, has anyone used any preview cards (specifically BLACKMAGIC) with the quad?

I have a Quad G5 with 4Gb RAM (equal pairs of 1GB sticks), ATTO UL5D SCSI and a Decklink Extreme card. It is working great, and Gridiron Nucleo is worth every cent to boost render times by up to 400%. Just remember that these machines use PCIe, so you can’t use conventional PCI boards in it.

Yes, Nucleo is a must have on the Quad. Get as much RAM as you can afford. Even though AE7 can only use 3 gigs, if you’re using Nucleo each copy of AE it launches in the background can use 3 gigs (I think) so you’re talking about a lot of RAM.

Yep – Nucleo is a RAM beast when it comes to the Quad. It dramatically impacts performance as well. As an example, a G5 Quad with 4GB of RAM rendered a test comp in 13 minutes, where 8 GB of RAM did it in less than 9 minutes. Of course – the same comp without Nucleo took almost 40 minutes – so 13 isn’t bad!
