  Wide Screen or Full Screen?

  I use Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 for creating photo/video montages with animations. I author the DVD’s in Adobe Encore DVD. I produce the montages in standard definition and have always produced them in full screen.

  With my current project, I am going with widescreen (still standard definition) to see if there is any benefit utilizing widescreen.

  I see pros and cons with going to widescreen.
  1. With TV display set to standard, a full screen video will fill up the set from top to bottom with space on either side. But the widescreen video will have space on top and bottom and on both sides.
  2. To have the widescreen video displayed on the entire screen, I have to change my TV display to overscan. Then the video image is not as crisp.
  3. Most people have widescreen TVs, and if there display is set to Overscan to watch their WS movies, then when they put in a full screen video the top and bottom are cut off.

  If there is a better place to post my question, please let me know.

  My question is: Do you have any input on if going to widescreen (with standard definition) is better or worse than utilizing full screen.

  I resolved my issue. My DVD player was set to 4:3 letterbox. When I set it to 16:9, the video displayed on the entire screen automatically.

  But, any other comments are appreciated.

  Widescreen is here now and it’s here to stay. There is absolutely no reason to create 4:3 content unless a hardheaded client absolutely wants it and you can’t convince then that they are still living in the 90’s. If you do broadcast content, that’s another issue.

  I try to convince my clients to use widescreen SD if they are not yet using HD. At least the material will be usable (if a bit soft) down the road when everything is 16:9.
