  • anyone using after effects with a decklink card?

Posted by Sean Bowerman on March 12, 2006 at 8:50 pm

please excuse this beginners question… i just got the decklink HD Pro 4:4:4 card to preview after effects (6.5) work on a production monitor. it didn’t come with instructions so i’m trying to figure out how to get it to see my compositions on a regular sony SD monitor (PVM 14L2).

i installed the software with all the drivers etc and i get the codec in the compression types….and i connected the component cables from the card via the breakout box to the monitor….but all i get is a ‘no sync’ on the monitor. so how can i get to see what i’m working on, as i work?

apologies if this is an easy one, but any suggestions would be greatfully received.

Are you using a Mac or a PC?
If you’re using a Mac, you should go to Preferences > Video Preview and enable the different preview options and set the output device to Blackmagic RGB 8 bit (PAL or NTSC).
If you’re on a PC I have no idea, because video previews work differently on the PC version. Probably some kind of Decklink plug-in is needed?

Have you been to https://www.blackmagic-design.com and checked out the manuals?

many many thanks adolfo. i was looking for options in the ‘preview’ preference of after effects instead of the ‘video preview’. (i’m using a mac). i now have a beautiful preview of my compositions on the broadcast monitor. it’s very exciting, and a bit of a shock how different it looks… anyway, now i just need to work out how to see the renders. any ideas? i adjusted the preference file to be able to output trillions of colours, but how do i get the rendered movies to play to the broadcast monitor? do i have to switch to quicktime to play back stuff?

and thanks to steve for the pointer to the blackmagic website. i did have a look but i have to say it’s not been much help. the latest reference to after effects is 5.5 and it doesn’t mention much about the actual practicalities of connecting the card to a monitor.

i still have to work out how to get a preview from final cut, so no doubt i will be posting again shortly.

if you do a RAM preview it should play back through your monitor rather than bothering rendering to a QT.

thanks chris. that works a treat. but does that mean i can’t run out finished rendered pieces to the broadcast monitor?

Well, i’m a little confused myself on that one. In previous versions of Decklink, it alowwed you to switch on “Use QT legacy” which means that if any quicktime program at all (inclusing the QT player) is playing a QT it will output it to the monitor. But in newer versions, it’s greyed out for me. So I may be missing something. But at any rate I usually do a RAM preview. Then when happy, I render out and add it to the timeline in FCP or DS to watch it in context with the rest of the footage.

    Hello, Sclyd,
In the Decklink’s preference pane, there’s a checkbox called “QT Playout”. You have to enable that one. It only works with specific codecs. I believe Blackmagic 8 bit (2vuy) was one of them.

But there’s an easier, more practical way. The Blackmagic Deck Control application can send QT movies to the monitor, with wider codec compatibility, I would say Apple 8/10 bit, BMD 8bit/19 bit, DV25, DV50 and Photo JPEG should work with it. You’re basically send it the video to a “deck”. If there’s no deck, but a direct connection to the monitor, the app will only print a warning about the lack of transport connection. But will work perfectly.

    All the best
    Adolfo
