Is there a way to improve the cursor reaction in Premiere when we’re playing and cueing In and Out points?
I have noticed that when i’m playing a footage with J-K-L keys, for example, and I want to stop in an exact point, as I hit the K or Space bar, the cursor doesn’t stop instantly. It goes a little further. When I used an AVID system, and I want to mark in and out points on the fly, the keys always reacted instantly.
Is there a way to change the key response in Premiere?

I think it has something to do with your computer, when i hit K or space bar Premiere stops instantly. The same goes for placing unnummered markers on the timeline.

I’m going to make a magic guess. The camera or VTR is connected and switched on while working with PPro. The lag in response has everything to do with the VTRs delay. Switch off the VTR and you should get instant response from PPro.

Yes, the firewire cable is connected from the Matrox BOB to a Sony HDV recorder. I turned the recorder off, but the cursor delay is is still present. The weird thing is that when I hit the K key or space bar, the cursor stops in the cue point and in less than 1 second it jumps a little ahead. Then I have to use the arrow key to adjust the correct point. It´s boring. I´m not workin with a slow computer. It´s a Core 2 Duo 3GHz with 3GB of RAM, an Intel DG33TL motherboard that is approved by Matrox and an ATI Saphire Graphic card that is also approved by Matrox. I cannot figure out why is this happening.

    hi Sergio…
i thinki know exactly what u mean cause i used to do my work on avid express before switching to adobe…
u’re absolutely right, the delay is there and i don’t think there’s anything to do about it… it’s some disadvantages with premiere…
but for me, with practice i got used to it, and i just hit the “k” just a few frames before where i actually want it stop…
i know it sounds wierd, but i just got used to it…
avid’s response to such tiny things is wayyyy much better than adobe’s…

    HI Sergio,
I’d been having the same problem, the cursor jumping ahead of where I’d stopped it, sometimes about a second after. Then I also started having a problem with the timeline lag on pressing play or the spacebar, this got progressively worse until I could count a 5 second delay! I’ve checked out many forums and eventually found an answer last night. Check your audio hardware in Premier Preferences and under Default Device make sure that System Device Input/Output is not selected, I have it as Built in Line Output and Premier is back to normal both on playing and stopping. I hope this helps.
    Best,
    El

    Hi Eli,

Are you using Premiere CS3? Because I could not find this option in my Preferences (Edit>Preferences). There are three audio sub-menus: Audio, Audio Hardware and Audio Output Mapping. I could not find the option you refers in any of these audio dialogs.

    HI Sergio,

Yes, I am using Premiere Pro CS3, I get to the Preferences from the Premier Pro drop down menu. I’m wondering why you don’t have the scroll down menu under Audio Hardware, I wonder if it’s anything to do with Audio Mapping – I’ve got 2 scroll down boxes: Default Device and Buffersize – what do you have?

To get the Preferences in Premiere I choose Edit>Preferences, and in the drop down menu in Preferences I can choose: General, Audio, Audio Hardware, Audio Output Mapping, Auto SAve, Capture, Device Control, Label Colors, Label Default, Media, Scratch Disks, Titler, Trim and User Interface.

The options I have in Audio dialog are:
    Automach time (1:00) seconds
5:1 Mixdown type: Front + Rear
    Play audio while scrubbing (checked)
Mut input during timeline recordin (unchecked)

The options I have in Source Channel Mapping dialog:

    Default Track Format (Use File)

    Automation Keyframe Optmization
    Linear Keyframe thinning (checked)

    Minimum time interval (unchecked)
    Minimum time ( ) milliseconds

The options I have in Audio Hardware dialog:

    Default Device (Premiere ProWindows Sound)
    Asio Settings…

    (i) The default device is used when audio is not being transmitted out the video hardware, or when recording direct to the timeline. To change transmit settings, go to the Playback Settings in the Project Settings dialog.

It’s all that shows in my dialogs.
I’m using the motherboard built in audio; I have not a separate audio card. Perhaps the lack of these options in the dialog is because I do not have a dedicated audio card… I don’t know.
Sorry for the long message text, but if you can help me I’ll appreciate.

    Sergio

I forgot to mention, but another weird this is happening with the audio. When I’m playing back a timeline, and then I stop and play backwards, I hear the audio that is ahead of the the cursor, and not the audio playing backward. I only rear the audio backwards when I hit the key one more time to play in hi speed.
This syntom began after I installed the Matrox RTX2.

I really can’t understand why this cursor delay in the PC version of Premiere CS3, because I have an iMac in my home and yesterdays I installed Premiere in it. And this syntom doesn’t occurs in the Mac version. When I hit space bar, the cursor stops instantly. It must have an explanation why this occurs in the PC, I’m not convinced that this is normal…
