I just upgraded to Adobe PP CS3 and I am working on my first project. My footage is HDV (1080i) and when I capture from my Sony GV-HD700 or my HDR-HC7 camera, I am not able to view the playback on my computer screen while deciding the in and out points of my clip, only on the devices from which the video is being captured. When I used CS2, I was able to view the footage on the monitor while I was deciding the in and out points, but not during the capture phase. When I called Adobe support, I was told that this was normal. I have a hard time believing that. I figure that it must be a setting, but I have tried everything I could think of. Does anyone out there know the solution…or if there is no solution, can someone recommend a program that actually works correctly so that I can return this one. I upgraded to CS3 in order to be able to produce Bluray discs. It should also be noted that I installed this program on a brand new high powered Alienware computer, with windows XP, in order to prevent such issues. Thanks.

Adobe is correct. There is no capability for viewing your footage during capture. An alternative is to use the free HDVSplit, that also allows scene detection but no preview either.

Thank you for your response. I do have another question however. I do understand that I will not be able to view the capture phase on my monitor. That was also true when using CS2. However, I was able to view the video on the capture screen prior to capturing, rather than watching it on my camera’s LCD, or the LCD provided on the video walkman. It is much easier to see on a large computer screen while you are making your cuts. Is there a way to watch the video on the capture screen while I am choosing the scenes to capture? That is something that I was able to do with CS2. Will HDVsplit help me to acheive this goal…or is there a setting that I am possibly missing? Thank you.

If that is your work flow, I suggest you connect your camera to a TV and note the time codes you want to capture, but I prefer capturing everything with HDVSplit. I can then remove everything I don’t want and proceed with the parts I like.

I capture my video to disk thru a Sony HVR-M15. My Dell monitor has picture-in-picture capability. So I capture thru the firewire connection and also connect the deck to the monitor via the component-out from the deck to the component-in on the monitor. That way I can watch as I record HDV in PPro CS3. If your monitor supports picture-in-picture then run a component out from the camera into the monitor; otherwise buy a cheap TV or LCD monitor.
I came from Liquid where you could watch the HDV material as it was being captured. Hopefully Adobe will catch up with that feature.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll give it a shot. Hopefully Adobe will get their act together and get it right.

You can preview HDV footage in the Capture Screen in CS3.
I do it all the time. It only disappears during capture.

I know that I was able to do it with CS2, but I still cannot do it with CS3. I have a brand new, high powered computer. I was on the phone for hours with Adobe and we still could not figure out why it isn’t working properly.
