Slow Performance w/ External Hard Drive
I’ve just purchased a Western Digital My Book (1TB) Hard Drive and I’m still having performance issues with Premiere Pro. I’ve transferred all video & sounds clips onto the Hard Drive away from the operating drive. That’s what Total Training advised me to do via training DVDs. It’s getting slower and slower everyday it seems like. I’m working with a Dell 2GB of Ram, Pentium D 3.00GHz, Windows XP… This isn’t my personal computer so I don’t have much more information to give you. I do video editing for my church so there is only so much I have to work with. Any questions, complaints, criticisms, comments, concerns??? Please help me out to the best of your ability. It’s getting very frustrating.

As a rule of thumb, USB achieves an average transfer rate of 20 MB/s (depending on the number of USB devices connected) or less, fire wire 400 around 30 MB/s, fire wire 800 around 40 MB/s and eSATA around 80 MB/s. USB is good for backups, not video editing.

But even if I’ve transferred all files to the Drive, shouldn’t PP work a little faster?

The USB connection is the bottleneck. Better get an internal SATA disk.

The trouble with USB is that it uses CPU for transfers, so if your CPU is busy (as it always is when editing), file transfers will get MUCH slower (like 3 MB/s in my case). I have 25-35 MB/s with the exact same drive connected via FW400. FireWire and eSata do not have this issue.
