  • Premier crashes when rendering?

Posted by Robert Storm on June 5, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Hey guys, I’m pretty frustrated, since I’ve got a project due tomorrow, and I’ve been trying to render it out since Wednesday. The problem is that every time I try to export it (using file>export), it goes for about 10 minutes, and then crashes. Sometimes it just closes, sometimes it gives me the infamous “send error message” dialog box, but most of the time its some premier error (Its not the same premier error message every time… I forgot what they were, but I’ll post them as I get them).
I’ve tried going file>export>movie, tried most of the formats/codecs there, and I’ve tried the adobe media encoder thing (I don’t remember what it was).
Anyway: What I was wondering is..are there any other export options? Like…ANY other way to export it? Maybe to another program that could render it (yeah..right…)?

Heck, I’d do an image sequence if I knew how. Can you even do that?
Its only a 10-12 minute video, so that’d be a long image sequence, but it’d be better than a premier project…

So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I guess it’d be important to mention that I’ve imported several after effects comps into premier… I don’t know if that’s significant or not.

    1) And I just got a BSOD while trying to render out just the first minute of the video.

    2) Premier just stopped doing anything. The “Elapsed time” counter stopped counting, the rendering progress bar stopped moving, and CPU usage is down to 2%.
Should I end process and try rendering a smaller clip at a time?

Render out the After Effects Comps and replace them in the timeline in PPro. Dynamic Link works for simple Comps that help you with timing and continue editing.
Are you rendering to a QT format? The version of QT makes a difference here. 7.4.1 had major bugs that would not allow Adobe software even AE to render out – error only showed at the end of render bar. !!! Either roll back to 7.3.1 or go upto 7.5.
You can use Adobe Media Encoder to export as well there are heaps of formats and commonly used presets for them. Get familiar with this way of exporting and you’ll hardly ever use File>Export>Movie again.
    – I’d Delete the Renders from the Sequence too. In Project>Remove unused. Save. Reopen this project – the RAM should be less. If you replace the AE Comps with Rendered clips that will make a massive difference to your export speed and stability (RAM is the crahsing culprit).

Ah cool, thanks a ton! I’ll try that.
It takes 4-5 minutes to load the project, usually.. if I render it out, will that fix that, too?

(I’m exporting it to an image sequence now, because I only have like 3 hours left, so..next time)

Yes it would make a very noticeable difference.

Okay, so I was trying to render it out before I put it into premier, but After Effects keeps on crashing..just a generic “sorry, after effects has crashed, here’s a chance to save your project” type thing.

    Any idea about that?
